Can I purchase a wordpress.com theme and host it somewhere else?

    Hi,

I’m considering hosting a wordpress site with the wordpress recommended hosting provider godaddy.com using this “http://minimumdemo.wordpress.com/” theme, but based on the information on wordpress.com I get the impression that this particular theme can only be hosted at wordpress.com, instead of downloading the theme after purchasing it and running the theme of my choice at a hosting company of my choice, while still having access to upgrades of the theme.

Can I purchase the “http://minimumdemo.wordpress.com/” theme and run it at Godaddy, without having to first set it up, run it empty and then move the empty site for a fee to Godaddy?

    Regards, Jk.

    1) Godaddy is NOT a recommended provider: http://wordpress.org/hosting/

    2) all themes are modified to run on WordPress.COM and you would need to modify the theme to make it run on a WordPress.ORG installed blog

WordPress.ORG has something like 1,500 free themes in their library you can use

    Thanks, but…

    1) http://get.wp.com/hosting/ states they are

    2) http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/ and http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/ suggest I can host elsewhere.

The questions remains can I take a theme that I bought along? And do I need to it setup on wordpress.com first, run it empty and then move it?

    1) suite yourself not my blog – look in the WordPress.ORG forum – i would not use them

the guided transfer gets you a theme that is close to what you have here but not the same theme –

Premium themes don’t transfer at all

from your link above – the fine print that you skipped

I purchased a premium theme at WordPress.com. Will it be transferred?
Premium themes purchased at WordPress.com are only valid here at WordPress.com.

Oops, you are right I missed the (not so) fine print. Your comments are much appreciated. Haven’t found a template on wordpress.org that looks as cool and has the same features though.

JetPack Plug-in adds back in many of the Widgets used here – it is written by WordPress.COM

Thanks again for the tip. Now all I’ve got to do is find a template that meets my requirements as much as the one mentioned earlier in this thread.
