Can I purchase Custom Design for $30?
-
The Custom Design page on the Dashboard says the upgrade can be purchased for $30. How can I purchase Custom Design on its own without a $100 premium plan?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Since your account was registered after Sept 1, 2014 you are subject to the Cable TV Bundle – Up-Sell special pricing – you can’t buy individual upgrades and need to buy the bundle for $99.- and buy stuff that you don’t seem to want or need.
I and many other argued against the new pricing policy but lost the argument
Your only option would be to find a friend with an older account and transfer the blog to that account or add the older account as an Admin and have the older account buy the upgrade for you – but make sure they are a real good friend so you don’t loose your blog
Sorry not better news

Unfortunately you are not eligible to purchase separate upgrades because the system WordPress.com changed in September. The new policy is that you must purchase the whole bundle in order to enjoy the benefits of only one or two of the services now available only as a package.
You can request a refund like so:

I cannot explain why staff has not changed the explanation for how to purchase upgrades on the “store” tab of the dashboards!!!
…especially for the love of cheesecake: second to my heart—well tongue and stomach (heart belongs to my <3 “J”) behind love of pasta…
sorry for the bad news.

The new plan makes no sense and I have had to bite my keyboard on several occasions – but must be making them more money shafting the new folks since they have not changed back – would be interesting to know who’s bright idea the new plan was – quite a few folks have said no deal on $99 but they would have went for $30 some have moved offsite for their hosting – for $99 you can get a nice hosting plan now – so in some respects they are now overpriced

@auxclass, I agree. There are many beginners who would like to dabble in an upgrade which might include a custom design option and a no-advert feature, but most of the other options on the $99 bundle would be a waste of money because they are more than many long-term users need. The domain names are regulated and some folks might enjoy that option, but lots of folks don’t want it. Or maybe those 3 bundled together would make sense. But $99 is a big bite of money…

Thanks, everyone! In this case, I am my own best friend since I have an old WordPress account under a different username. I transferred my blog back and forth and got the upgrade.
I’ve been a WordPress.com user for about five years and I learned a long time ago that they don’t care about their users, so I’m no longer surprised by what they do. :)
I’m too used to how the site works, so I won’t switch over, but I would NEVER recommend an immoral business like WordPress. It seems to exist only to fleece its loyal customers.

You be welcome – I love it when a plan comes together
I have stopped giving WordPress.COM as a recommended host without a lot of caveats now – several folks have decided to pass on here & upgrades – one of the side effects of everyone knowing that I do boating safety stuff and have a web site – I get constant questions on both

Excuse me if I disagree: WordPress.com is not immoral!!! There are so many evil things perpetrated on living creatures in our world to use such a strong adjective. Their business plan does not make sense to many of us loyal users, with the new upgrade package and the new mandatory and blatant “buy now” footers on most themes, but it is not truly wicked.
Using such strong words diminishes our language because it has consequences about how we express ourselves and about how we feel. Using too strong words when they are not merited weakens them.
What WordPress.com is doing, IMNSHO, is foolish. They could make smarter business decisions. But what they are doing are commercial.
Choices many of us users would be wiser because we actually use the software platform. We may be the few, the happy band, the loyal siblings who love our work, and love the providence which made us able—we do hope to carry on.

That older pricing was showing up in just that one page on the dashboard where it shouldn’t have been listed any more. I’m really sorry it caused some confusion! It has been fixed now so you should see $99, which is the correct price for the Premium Plan which you can find out more about at http://store.wordpress.com/plans/ if you are interested.
Thank you very much for reporting the issue about the Custom Design page. Sorry again for the trouble.
