Can I put the READ MORE tag within a blog, rather than at the end?

  • Unknown's avatar

    If I put a READ MORE tag in a post, how do I indicate that the MORE section is over? I don’t want the READ MORE to be at the end of my post, but within it, then I can continue with writing more stuff on that post after the bit that I want in the READ MORE section. my blog is creativeincullompton.co.uk or tricia596.wordpress.com. Thanks Tricia

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hey Tricia,

    I want to make sure I understand your question correctly. You’re wondering how to specify where in your post the content cuts with the “Read More” tag. Is that correct? If so, you can enter the “More” tag anywhere in your post as explained here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

    Any content above the “More” tag will be displayed on your front page and archive pages. When readers click to read the full post, they will not see the “Read More” link on the full post page. You can write your entire post then decide where you would like to display the “More” tag. Does that make sense?

    Yes, it does make sense, but I want to continue writing AFTER the read more section. I don’t want the read more to be at the end of the post. What I don’t know is how to indicate the end of the read more. T

    Hi!

    I believe I understand. You can enter the Read More tag wherever you would like within a post so that you have content before and after the tag. When inserting the tag into your post, it will insert wherever you have your cursor. So, if you have your cursor at the bottom of the post, it will get inserted there. However, if you click up higher in your post, it will be inserted towards the top. You can place it wherever you like.

    I created a quick screencast to illustrate how the tag can be placed:

    Give that a look and let me know if it helps to explain the tag a bit better!

    Thanks but I can’t see anything on the page you linked. it is simply a black blank page.

    I do understand that the Read More tag will go in wherever the cursor is, and then, presumably I insert the text for the Read More. Once that is done, how do I indicate on the page that the read more is over.

    Perhaps there is another step to this process that I am missing. Is there a step by step instruction somewhere that I can follow? Tricia

    Hi!

    I apologize, but I’m not quite clear what you mean by the following:

    Once that is done, how do I indicate on the page that the read more is over.

    Let me describe the “Read More” tag a bit. When you insert the tag into a post, you should see something like this appear in the Text Editor.

    <!--more-->

    Anything above that tag will appear on the main post page and archive pages. Anything beneath that tag will only appear on individual post pages. If you would like, you can edit the “more” link to say whatever you would like as in the following examples:

    <!--more Continue Reading-->

    <!--more Keep on reading!-->

    The tag just needs to be preceded by <!– and ended with !–>.

    When you insert the tag in your post, you don’t need to specify a beginning and an end to the tag outside of the brackets mentioned above. Anything before the tag will be shown. Anything after the tag will be hidden from the home page and blog pages.

    This is explained a bit more here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

    Does that help to clarify the tag? If I’m misunderstanding your question, I apologize. If you could expand on the sentence mentioned above, I’d appreciate it!

    Firstly, thanks for trying to help. OK. I have a blog post with various parts to it. One of those parts is too long and I want to “hide” most of it using READ MORE. However, I then want to continue on with the remaining parts of the post on the same front page. I wondered if it is possible to have the READ MORE section in the middle of a post. Everything I have read indicate that it goes at the end, and as you say, everything below the READ MORE goes on another page, so probably not. I wondered if it is possible to click the READ MORE at the appropriate place, insert the long bit of the post, then click READ MORE again to signal it is over, and then continue with the other parts of the post. Do I want too much? T

    Ah I understand. I appreciate the additional information. It sounds like you’re looking for more of an expanding content feature wherein the content is hidden until a reader clicks a link or button. The content then expands. The hidden content would be in the middle of a blog post.

    Unfortunately, that type of collapsing content isn’t available at WordPress.com. The closest available feature would be the Page Jumps listed here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/page-jumps/

    Using page jumps, you could leave the designated content at the bottom of your post so it doesn’t clog up the middle of your content. Then, you could include a page jump link and label it “Read More” or whatever you would like. When readers click that link, they will be brought down to the bottom of the page to read the extra content. Then, you could include a “Back to Top” link at the bottom of the page so readers could go back to their previous place in the post. You can see this feature in action here by using the Table of Contents on the upper right-hand side:

    Working With Audio

    Would that work for what you’re looking for?

    Thanks you. Knowing that you understand what I want is a relief. I am familiar with the Jump technique and generally find it very annoying. The Inland Revenue uses it extensively. I’m not sure I will use it. I will rethink and alter the format of a post in order to put a Read More at the end. Thank you for sticking with this one. Tricia

    Hey Tricia,

    Not a problem. I’m sorry it took me so long to grasp what you were looking for! Please let me know if you need anything else.
