can I really not run ads on my blog?
-
I run a very small not-for-profit blog that is supported by a few local business that run banner ads on our blog. Right now I self-host a wordpress.org blog but i’d like to use wordpress.com which is so much easier to manage. I’m willing to pay for the service, but can I really not run any ads if I use wordpress.com? I looked at all the options and help documents and it seems that it is not allowed. But is that really true? (p.s. the blog I’ve put up on wordpress.com is just a copy of my live blog that I’m using to test the service)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No you cannot initiate any advertising.

You really, really can’t use ads. It is really true.
Also, if you have a blog here that is just a duplicate of a blog elsewhere, staff have requested that you set it to Private. If you don’t, search engines will probably classify both sites as spam anyway.

You cannot post advertising on your blog here at WordPress.com. There is only one advertising program called WordAds at WordPress.com and it’s for blogs on their own domains. Aside from a blog being accepted into WordAds http://www.wordads.co/ no blogger initiated advertising, retailing or reselling the work or products created or services provided by anyone other than yourself is allowed on free hosted wordpress.com blogs. E-commerce transactions via shopping carts and the like cannot be conducted on free blogs from and being free hosted by WordPress.com. Paid content and/or sponsored content is not allowed.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/There is no upgrade you can purchase from WordPress.com that changes any of that. If you do require an ecommerce site, advertising, affiliate links, paid or sponsored content you can hire a web host and get a free software install from http://wordpress.org
Refer to > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/No content is lost. You hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up a WordPress.org install. Then you export your content out of the WordPress.com site and import it into the WordPress.org site.

Thank you. Is it possible to set the entire blog private instead of individual posts? I’m just testing the blog to see if it will work.

The engineer that set up our blog is leaving and I’m only semi-technical (I can edit CSS but not edit/code template pages). I’m having a really hard time customizing the templates and wordpress.com makes it so easy. I was really hoping that I could use this service. But we need our ads to pay for our hosting and small expenses. I guess I’m out of luck.

To change blog visibility go to > Settings > Reading. See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

You don’t need ads to pay for your hosting if you’re hosted at WordPress.com; hosting is free here.

@TT & RC
I am hesitant to ask this because some people would drive a truck through – I looked at their site and they did seem to be some sort of community service group – what if they had some sort of either page or something in the side bar thanking their supporters to the service group and they don’t have any contact us for ads stuff?
Fine line – maybe ask the TOS staff?
