Can I recover a wordpress.com site if I need to?

  I’m a bit new to this, so I’ll apologize if this is a silly question. If I have a free wordpress.com site, then who is taking care of the backups? If I have some kind of issue (like the site was hacked or deleted) then how do I request a recovery from a previous backup?

  I’m not in need of that right now, I just want to know what to expect.
