Can I Remove Blog Feed From My Menu?

  • Unknown's avatar

Now that I know a little bit about menus I’m wondering if anything bad would happen if I remove the Blog Feed link from the navigation menu in my sidebar.

Does this feature serve any other purposes besides displaying all my content in chronological order? Do other services use it perhaps?

    Any advice welcomed, thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @nukeban! I hope you’re safe and well. No you don’t have to have the posts page in the menu bar, though I do recommend having a posts page set, just in case.

Services will generally use your RSS feed, which isn’t displayed in the bar anyway.

Let us know if you have more questions!

    Hope you’re staying safe too!

Hmm, I thought I knew how to remove a page from the menu in sidebar, but see now I don’t.

I think the problem may be that my theme (Wilson) automatically created that menu, and the Blog Feed page was installed by the theme. Point being, I had nothing to do with creating the menu, thus I don’t know how to edit it. When I go in to the Dashboard/Appearance/Menu section I see no way to edit the menu.

However, in my test blog I had to create the menu myself, and so the Dashboard/Appearance/Menu section does allow me to add and delete pages from the menu. So I see how it supposedly should work.

This isn’t a big problem, I’m mostly messing with it just to learn WP.

If we don’t all die in the next few minutes, I’ll be interested in any thoughts you may have on this. Thanks.

  • So it sounds like the site is using the default menu which includes all pages then.

To remove that page in this case, you’ll need to build a new custom menu that doesn’t include it: https://wordpress.com/support/menus/

Yes, that appears to be the case. The Wilson theme I’m using automatically created the menu in sidebar, and automatically adds new pages to that menu. So I never had to create a menu, or add things to it. So far that’s great, but…

The problem is that I see no way to edit the menu that Wilson has created.

As example, I’ve created a subcategory “Knowledge” to go under the category “Opinion”. I’ve assigned a page to that subcategory. But I see no way to add the new subcategory to the menu that Wilson has created.

I see other Wilson themed websites that do show subcategories in the sidebar menu, so obviously it’s possible.

you’ll need to build a new custom menu that doesn’t include it:

Ok, I can probably do that. But what do I do about the menu that is already there? Are you suggesting that I somehow delete the menu Wilson created and build a new menu from scratch to replace it?

Just spent an hour digging through various WP and Wilson docs, and that’s not getting me where I hope to go. Advice welcomed.

You cannot edit the default menu, no. You need to replace it by creating a new custom menu as staff-blorbo explained above:

    Menus

As example, I’ve created a subcategory “Knowledge” to go under the category “Opinion”. I’ve assigned a page to that subcategory.

If you want a category to appear in the menu there’s no need to create a page for the category. The moment you publish a post in a category WordPress automatically creates a category archive page, and if you create a custom menu you can add a link to that archive page directly to the menu:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/

But what do I do about the menu that is already there? Are you suggesting that I somehow delete the menu Wilson created and build a new menu from scratch to replace it?

You build a new menu from scratch, yes, but you don’t delete the default menu. The moment you set your custom menu as primary, the default menu will automatically be removed.

    Ah, I see now, thanks.

So I can let Wilson automatically generate the menu as I’ve been doing, but if I want control to edit and delete etc I need to create a new menu, and then set my new menu as primary. Got it! Appreciate your assistance.
