Can I reprint a NYT obit?
-
I’m thinking of including a NY Times’ obituary in my next post, so two questions occur to me: 1) am I going to run afoul of the copyright laws if I use it, and 2) if it’s ok to print it, what format is best, jpg or tif? TIA

I’m not aware of the NY Times copyright and terms of use policies. Perhaps you will find them on their site.

If you can get the text – block quotes so it is set in – remember to have full credit – I like text that is set off – usually easier to read than a scan.

The limitations of Fair Use are summarized here http://www.blogherald.com/2008/02/18/the-limitations-of-fair-use/I would strongly suggest that you do not copy and paste the entire obituary into a blog post and you do not copy and paste a full sized image. Simply use a thumbnail image and a small excerpt from the obituary, and attribute the image credit and authorship correctly with a link back to the complete obituary.
