Can I resize the width of the sidebar on Vigilance theme?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I am a free user and setting up my blog:

    http://wehopeyoulikeit.wordpress.com/

and wondering if it is possible to resize the right sidebar on vigilance theme (it is way too wide).
I actually wanted to use child pages for some of the pages, but this theme doesn’t support it, trying to figure out what is the best way to complete this blog.

ps: is it possible to erase the right sidebar? that would be a good solution to me too..

    thanks in advance,
i am a new user to wordpress.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

What you suggest it not possible without CSS editing experience and the purchase of an annually renewable CSS upgrade. If you have CSS editing experience, you can get the paid custom CSS upgrade and renew it annually. It will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but it does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.

Since there is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, and precious little Volunteer support, I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because you must be prepared to do the work on your own.

If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.

    Add Custom CSS

I actually wanted to use child pages for some of the pages, but this theme doesn’t support it, trying to figure out what is the best way to complete this blog.

Currently, the Bueno, Enterprise (2 dropdown levels), iNove, Inuit Types, Monochrome, Neutra, Sandbox 1.6.1, Structure, Twenty Ten, Titan and Vostok themes are the only ones that have dropdowns to child pages from parent pages in the top horizontal menu.

The Vigilance theme does allow you to create child pages. All themes here allow their creation. They will not appear in the horizontal menu in the Vigilance theme or in others as well. In order to access sub-pages you have to place a Pages widget in your sidebar. http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/pages-widget/

    thank you,

unfortunately I do not have any understanding of css and html,
so upgrading won’t be helpful to me personally,

    an other question:

I have already created PAGES widget in the sidebar, but all other pages showed up,
I lfound out I can ‘hide’ some pages, but is it possible to activate some pages only when I click on PHOTOS page in the top horizontal menu? what I am trying to create is a little submenu, which appears only when I clicked on PHOTOS for example.

is it possible to activate some pages only when I click on PHOTOS page in the top horizontal menu?

No I’m sorry but that’s not possible.

anyways, thank you for your quick replies

Being a bearer of bad news sucks. I wish you well with your blogging and you’re welcome. :)

As a user of Vigilance, I hope you don’t mind the interjection.

Timethief is correct with regards to the parent/child pulldown issue. Our theme does not support it (I wish it did) – I just learned that myself this weekend! (She’s awesome when it comes to WordPress).

With regards to the sidebar that is too wide – you actually have the choice of using the wide sidebar (which would give you one wide sidebar for the right) or there are 2 narrower sidebars that reside side by side to each other and which allow more flexibility in your widget use. They are considerably narrower and you don’t have to use both. I use the 2 sidebars.

Here is my blog if you’d like to see what the 2 sidesbars might look like:

    Good luck!

    @starrygirl1
Good point! I completely overlooked the fact that wehopeyoulikeit may not know there are 2 narrower sidebars that could be used instead of the wide sidebar at the top of the column. Thanks for wading in. :)

    ow, thanks for the notice!

I have actually used the right sidebar, which might be the narrower, but the widgets still appear on the left.. no idea why, tried to change it (by dragging within the widgets) but no change appeared..

I have used this theme and until you fill up the left hand sidebar this is what you will get.

  • Unknown's avatar

the left one works, the right one works only when there is a widget in left sidebar as well, as soon as I empty my left sidebar, everything form the right one shows up on the left.
    :(

Place a text widget with nothing in it in the left sidebar and then see what happens.

  • Unknown's avatar

I just tried putting an empty text widget in the left sidebar in my test blog and it worked. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

actually, it worked, I had to ‘type’ some nothing with spacebar,
without text it didn’t work, but with ‘space’ it did,

    thank you!

  • Unknown's avatar

I did the same but forgot to say so above. You’re welcome. :)
P.S. The page is looking good. Love your header. :)
