Can I revert to a free theme from a $26 one?
-
I would like to keep my blog, lillycapecod.com, but I want to revert to a theme that I would not have to pay for. Im not using this blog at the moment, but plan to when I take my next WordPress class. Is there a way to change to a free theme? Thank you, Jane
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The reason I chose this theme, was to have the text float over the background image. But there must be other themes which allow this transparency effect? I haven’t worked with WP for a while, but will be taking another class, and its a lot of fun. Thanks, Jane

Hi Jane,
Please note that the $26 is not for the theme, but for your domain name:
lillycapecod.com
Your theme: Sandbox 1.6.2 is free, but if you would like to find another header that allows you to change the header image, you might want to try this search:
http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/custom-header/
It may not be exactly what you want, but it may filter out the themes that lets you customize the header.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Hi Grace,
Oh, I thought it was the theme.
How do I keep lillycapecod?I have this one also, but for some reason it incurs no fees?
http://capecodlilly2.wordpress.com/I am not sure why one costs money and the other one doesnt?

Hi Jane,
You purchased the custom domain: lillycapecod.com. Therefore, your site can now be found at lillycapecod.com instead of capecodlilly2.wordpress.com. This upgrade allows you to have a custom domain instead of the free site with “.wordpress.com” at the end of it.
You can keep lillycapecod.com by going to Store > My Upgrades in your Dashboard. Please make sure to renew this yearly.
If you have any questions about this, please let me know!

How would I get .wordpress.com put back on the end of it? That is just fine by me.
But I think I understand this now? Is this just like my own domain, http://www.jcarter.net, though hosted by WP and not my webhost?
How could I view my files?
Sorry I am so dumb about this,,,,,,,I sure cannot complain about $26 a year, if I could add to it?

Hi Jane,
Currently, your domain name: lillycapecod.com is set to expire in March 2014. Please note that the $26 is just for the domain name and mapping to your WordPress.com site, nothing else. So you have it until March of next year. If you don’t want it and would like to cancel it before the expiration please let me know and I can remove it from your account.
Please note that canceling a domain at this time means you completely give up ownership of the domain. There is no guarantee the domain will become available to re-register after cancellation.
If you don’t want to cancel it just yet, but would prefer using the free version: capecodlilly2.wordpress.com, let me know and I can change that for you.
You can view all your content by logging into your Dashboard. Please log into WordPress.com and visit your site: lillycapecod.com. At the top left hand corner of the page hover for your site title and a menu will appear. Click on Dashboard, and all your content will be viewable there.

Hi Grace,
I dont want to cancel it, but wonder if I can upload pictures and small html pages Ive recently made to the server in addition to my blog?If I cant, then can you turn it into the free version, http://lillycapecod.wordpress.com
That would be fine, if I cant use the domain for additional uploads.
Or if I can upload things other than the blog itself, then I certainly would like to keep the domain, and pay the $26 a year.
Let me know which I should consider, now that I understand things a bit better.
And thanks for being patient with me, Im not too good at all this web stuff yet, Im learning.Jane

Hi Jane,
Your domain name has nothing to do with the content of your site (such as uploading pictures or linking pages). Domain names are just the address at which your content will be viewed. You can find more information about this here.
You can upload images with the domain or without. It does not matter. The domain would only matter if you want readers to go to: lillycapecod.wordpress.com or lillycapecod.com.
You can upload images to your blog using this guide.
If you want to link pages to your blog, check out this guide.
I highly recommend you go through our new user’s guide:
In 10 quick steps, you’ll learn about all the best and most useful features of WordPress.com, with lots of screenshots and videos.
You can also browse our support documentation and check out the forums – you might find the answer you’re looking for.

Such good news!
I will go thru your links for info. and look thru the new users guide. I also see the dashboard is a lot more intuitive since the last time I used it.The only thing I am still confused about, is can we separately upload something to the site that would be separate from the blog itself. Maybe I mean, can I view the files like I can with my own FTP program?
I will log in later on, and reinstate my payment plan. But I have to go out for a while, be back later and will do and read all these things.
Thanks again,

Hi Jane,
I’m sorry but we do not allow FTP access on WordPress.com blogs. To upload images and documents, first check the accepted files support page to make sure filetype you would like to add is allowed.
I hope everything works out!
Cheers!

AH! That was my question, I just didn’t know how to word it. No FTP access.
So I think the best thing to do is to have you turn my
http://lillycapecod.com into
http://lillycapecod.wordpress.com
if that is possible. I certainly want to keep the blog, and not pay for it, if I dont have FTP access.
I would like to have the wordpress word right after lillycapecod, if that is how you do it.Please let me know if this is the way to do it, if its possible.
Thanks again,

Hi Jane,
You can set your primary domain by going to Store > Domains in your Dashboard. I have set it to lillycapecod.wordpress.com as requested.
Please note, I left the domain as it is not set to expire until March 2014. The auto-renewal has been disabled so you will not be charged in the future for the renewal of this domain.
-
Hi Grace,
That sounds good.
So the blog will remain on the web, with its new URL.
Will be a free one. And the old domain of lillycapecod will expire.Im not sure of what a primary domain is, as I have 5 blogs and I just use their URLs to go to each of them.
Is that OK? -
Hi Jane,
Yes that should be fine. You can find your blog at lillycapecod.wordpress.com instead of lillycapecod.com as requested.
-
Thank you again,
This will do what I need, still have the blog, but not have to pay for the domain name. We can let it expire.
I already have 2 on another server with full FTP access.I might go for lillycapecod.net, as its not used yet, but do I need another one?
No, not until my grandson is ready for his. -
You can purchase the domain: lillycapecod.net whenever you want and if it’s available. You do not need to add a domain name unless you need it :)
