Can I run a business website as well as a blog, and do I have to pay

Can I run a business website as well as a blog, and do I have to pay? I already have a website, built with Kompozer but it is getting very clunky to update. I would like to build a new one with WordPress, will I have to pay or can I choose a free theme? I have another question, can I build it gradually without it being made public, because it will take a while to do. Thanks Liz

There is a plan called Business on WordPress.com

Note that a blog is a website.
A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication. As the posts are frequently updated and appear on the front page of the site it’s very attractive to search engines.
What most people call a website is merely a page based site that functions as a one way noticeboard. As the structure is page based and as pages are for static content that rarely changes, and as pages do not have RSS feeds, and as others do not backlink to pages, it is not as attractive to search engines as a post based blog structured site is.
Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based – no upgrade required. For greater clarity read > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/
Here’s a link to my step by step post too http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/07/25/create-a-wordpress-website-step-by-step/
WordPress.COM is turnkey operation with off the shelf themes. Here we do not do sophisticated site building. Those I help can register a site, publish 4 posts and 4 pages and have the site up and running within 4 hours time. Please read this comparison carefully as a WordPress.ORG install may suit your needs better https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
To change blog visibility on any WordPress.COM hosted site to Private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3. See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings
WordPress.com provides free blogs and hosts them free of charge. There are no bandwidth charges. All WordPress.com blogs come with 3000 megabytes (~3 GBs) of space for storing uploaded files and images. Free features are listed here https://en.wordpress.com/features/
See here for details of all 3 plans http://store.wordpress.com/bundles/ offered by WordPress.com.
Premium bundle details http://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/
Business bundle details http://store.wordpress.com/plans/business/Note that each upgrade bundle applies to a single blog only and is for a single year only when it is due to be renewed.
We all pay in full for every upgrade at the time of purchase. Make sure you read the comparison very closely so you know exactly what the restrictions and limitations on WordPress.COM blogging are: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Thank you very much timethief for taking the time to email me your info, that’s very helpful, I will quietly read that later! So much to learn.

Hello Timethief, may I ask another question, having read some of the links you kindly sent through, if I add “new wordpress” in my ADMIN in order to create another website, will it have to be in the same theme,( I am currently in Expound theme) ? I hope this doesn’t sound too obvious a question….also if I choose “privacy” for the time being to the new website whilst I am building it, will the current blog still be public or will that go private too? That is to say are they completely or only partially independent of one another? Thanks, Liz.
