Can I sell ad space with my free wordpress.com blog?
-
Hi, I have a unique blog that informs my countrymen of the communities and villages that are affected by a major earthquake fault line. I think I have been getting a good number of visitors and views. I believe I can still increase these numbers some more. Though I started doing this purely to help people, knowing that the tremendous job I did no one else has been able to duplicate, I feel that if I can earn some revenues on the side, I should be abe to devote more time to my blog and even help lots more people. Please give advise on how I can start to go about advertising and earning from my blog.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there. WordPress.com doesn’t allow ANY user-initiated advertising. Adding Google Adsense or any other type of advertising, including selling ad space directly to specific businesses/organisations will get your blog suspended. http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/
The exception is if you have a custom domain and a certain threshold of views per day, you can apply for the WordAds program run by WordPress themselves. For more info on WordAds, please visit their page and/or contact their support directly, here: http://wordads.co/

thanks for the prompt reply. simultaneously when i emailed you, i contacted wordads but still haven’t heard from them yet. registering for a custom domain is very easy. but if i do and wordads later reject my application, i’ll be losing my big following (309,749 view to date). pls. understand i have to be assured by wordads first before registering for a custom domain. luckily, i drafted my message to wordads; here it is:
hi, i would like to have a REQUEST INVITATION but i don’t have a custom domain –yet. can you please review my blog here(tulisanes.wordpress.com)if it has potential and that i can monetize it with your WordAds? if it has a potential, getting a custom domain is a no-brainer and will just take loose change for me to register. if it’s not the material you seek, then why should i spend first and get rejected ultimately? to date, my blog has 309,611 views and lately my stats have been booming. the type of ads that will do well with my blog are real estates and engineering technology to retrofit
houses/buildings to withstand earthquakes. my blog focuses on my country the philippines, which is cited this year as a leading rising economy of asia, and the strong impetus for my viewers to buy the appropriate goods and services from Word Ads is FEAR –the fear of a
7.2 magnitude earthquake whose possibility of occurring is a question of WHEN and NOT IF, and which is rather late in coming and can be expected to happen any time (this is verifiable data from PHIVOLCS, the government-funded scientific body studying the WEST VALLEY FAULT LINE of the marikina valley fault line system). may i add that many communities that the fault line traverses are first class subdivisions which are home to the philippine elite. i hope i painted a clear picture of the possibilities my blog can offer to WordAds. thank you for taking the time to read this, and i hope i can have a feedback from WordAds soon.maybe if you’re having lunch with somebody from wordads, you can remind them i’m awaiting a courtesy reply. i hope you can help me as i am helping hundreds of thousands of people for, practically, out of kindness. thanks, man, for giving a reply.

Getting a custom domain won’t affect your followers. In fact, nothing at all will change except what visitors see in their browser address bars when they’re viewing your site. Your WordPress.com site will remain exactly where it is at http://tulisanes.wordpress.com/ . The custom domain will simply be laid over it. See here exactly how it works: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/all-about-domains/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgradingAll you might experience is a temporary drop in search ranking as the major search engines re-index your site at the new URL, but after a few weeks the search ranking should return to what it was before you made the change.

I don’t work for WordPress.com and I live in South Africa, so the chances of me having lunch with someone from WordAds are incredibly slim ;-) I’ve no idea how long they take to respond to applications, so best to just be patient.

Like me, kokkieh is a forum volunteer here. He doesn’t determine who qualifies for WordAds, but he is correct about the need for a custom domain before you can apply. From the WordAds FAQ:
Q: Why do I need a custom domain name?
A: We are unable to provide WordAds for blogs with the default free [example].wordpress.com URL, so you’ll need to either register a new domain name or map an existing domain name to your WordPress.com blog of choice.
If you need to contact the WordAds Staff, you can do so here: https://wordads.co/contact/
