Can I sell on WordPress if I am in the UK?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there. I’ve had a blog ( free blog) on WordPress for a few years now but am interested in upgrading so I could sell my artwork on WordPress. I want to know if as a UK national if I could do this on WordPress.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there!

    Yes, you can add sell your artwork through WordPress.com.

    There are a few options to add eCommerce functionality on WordPress.com.

    We can add a basic PayPal button on a Free or Personal plan
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/get-paypal-button-code/

    There is a much simpler way to add payment buttons on your site — Simple Payments. The feature is available for Premium and Business plans on WordPress.com
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/simple-payments/

    If you want to add store functionality then the Business Plan on WordPress.com can help you achieve it. It gives the ability to add third-party plugins and themes, which enables a wide variety of eCommerce solutions.

    Hope this helps and let us know if you have any more questions.

    Thanks for the reply- yes I had seen the basic PayPal button for the free/personal plans only now it says that is not available for those:

    “Get PayPal Button Code
    There is now a much simpler way to add payment buttons on your site — Simple Payments. The feature is available for Premium and Business plans on WordPress.com and on Jetpack sites running version 5.2 or higher.”

  • yes I had seen the basic PayPal button for the free/personal plans only now it says that is not available for those:

    Where do you see that it is not available?
    The page mentions that Simple Payments is a much easier way to add the payment buttons but you can still add the basic Paypal button on a free site. There are more steps to follow to add the basic button compared to Simple Payments but it works.

    I was able to add a Paypal button successfully on my test site. Please follow the steps mentioned in this support document and let us know if you run into issues-

    Thank you very much for your reply yamphonenix.

    I referred to the paragraph “Get PayPal Button Code
    There is now a much simpler way to add payment buttons on your site — Simple Payments. The feature is available for Premium and Business plans on WordPress.com and on Jetpack sites running version 5.2 or higher.”

    The way it is worded indicated to me that this was only available for premium/paid WP sites.

    A basic Pay Pal button is more than fine by me!

    I followed the instructions but the widget did not get created.

    I agree that the first paragraph on the PayPal support doc needs looking at by staff as it is confusing to people just wanting a PayPal button on a free site. If you ignore:

    There is now a much simpler way to add payment buttons on your site — Simple Payments. The feature is available for Premium and Business plans on WordPress.com and on Jetpack sites running version 5.2 or higher.

    And follow the rest of the instructions at https://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/get-paypal-button-code/ it should work.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I have followed the instructions exactly twice and nothing happens for me.

    Firstly the code pasted into a dummy post does not generate a pay pal button but just a dead hyperlink.

    Secondly, the instructions to create the widget did not work.

    It leads me to think that this button can only be made for a paid business WP site.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I am generally very good at IT but this is very very confusing to follow.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Could I not just buy a pay pal plug in to add to my site?

  • I agree it gets confusing sometimes when the things don’t work.
    No worries, we can help you sort it out.

    Firstly the code pasted into a dummy post does not generate a pay pal button but just a dead hyperlink.

    Are you using the new block editor or the classic editor to edit the post?
    If you’re using the block editor, then please add the code for the button in the Custom HTML block. Click the plus symbol and search for this block to add your code.

    If you’re using the Classic editor, then click on the HTML tab on the top right of the editor and insert the code there. If the code is inserted in the Visual tab, it will not get converted to a button but will display the link as it is.

    Secondly, the instructions to create the widget did not work.
    Are you inserting the code in the Text widget? Please click on the Text tab on the top right of the Text widget and paste the code there.

    Your Paypal button code goes between the quotation marks where it says ‘YOUR-LINK-HERE’ in the code provided below:

    <a href="YOUR-LINK-HERE">
    <img src="https://www.paypalobjects.com/en_US/i/btn/btn_buynow_LG.gif" alt="Buy Now Button">
    </a>

    Could I not just buy a pay pal plugin to add to my site?
    To install plugins on WordPress.com, we need to be on the Business Plan.
    But that is not required if the Paypal button suffices your requirement.

    Hope that helps :)

    Thanks for the reply. I’m using the Classic editor.

    I have indeed used the html setting but it still just comes out as a hyperlink and not a pay pal button.

    I just have no idea where to post the pay pal button code in the instructions stated thus:

    Your Paypal button code goes between the quotation marks where it says ‘YOUR-LINK-HERE’ in the code provided below:

    Buy Now Button

    I am just so confused how to do this.

    I went to the widgets in my admin page and did what it said in step 5 here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/

    but it did not work.

    I will tell you what I’m trying to do because maybe that will help with the instructions more easily.

    Within my blog posts I would like to put in some photos of a piece of art of mine then the pay pal button if someone would like to buy it ( like I’ve seen on other blogs).

    I might also create a another page on my blog for my art listings as well.

    I would like to one day upgrade to the business plan but as I need to create loads more art for now it is a small thing.

    Hi there,

    <a href="https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=XYCNCP5MN89YE">
    <img src="https://www.paypalobjects.com/en_US/i/btn/btn_buynow_LG.gif" alt="Buy Now Button">
    </a>

    This code should generate a PayPal button that will direct users to send money to your AOL email.

    Follow yamphoenix‘s instructions above for the Text Widget!

    Please let me know if this doesn’t work, happy to help further.

    My apologies, it seems I’m missing part of the code in the reply above. Please use this code instead:

    <a href="https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=XYCNCP5MN89YE">
    <img src="https://www.paypalobjects.com/en_US/i/btn/btn_buynow_LG.gif" alt="Buy Now Button"></a>
  • @edwardianpiano: If you’re still having trouble in adding the button, then please provide the link to the page or post where you’re adding the button and type the modlook tag in the sidebar for staff help.

    Hello yamphoenix and eozolins87. I think I have done it now, after many test runs, phew.

    I hope this link will work to show you how it looks in a dummy post:

    https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipOsCm79IxgUSwljjYE5DgfyNs_6RWzn1iYOqGa5

    Presumably if I put this link into a post where I want to offer artwork to buy and someone clicks on the button it takes them to pay pal?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Oh gosh where are my manners, meant to say thanks once again for the help folks.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Sorry once again folks. I’m an oldster who really should wear the reading glasses! I just saw one post was from ” themagicrobot”- thank you for your reply too and I love your avatar and name!

  • I’m glad it worked for you.
    Thanks for letting us know.

    The link above is not working. If you’re willing to share the post link once you publish we’ll be glad to check it for you.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Can you see it on this link?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

    Yes, I can see the PayPal button on the link you posted! You’ve posted a link to a screenshot rather than to your website, though, so I can’t click the button to see if it works.

    Can you reply here with a link to the test post? Then we can click the link and see if it functions correctly.
