Can I set up a trial custom site to see if this is the best option for me?

Is there a way to create a custom site on a trial basis without buying all of the customisation extras?

I want to move 3 websites over from WebEden who still haven’t moved over to HTML5, but I want to check that the design of my most complex site will transfer over okay. Basically – I want to set up a few pages with the different page templates in WordPress as a proof of concept.

I *think* I can see that I can customise the design any way I like by paying $30 a year, which seems reasonable, but I would like to try before I commit. I’d also like to get straight in my head how much all the add-ons I will need are going to cost to see if this really is my best option, but I am finding it a bit confusing.

I can code a little and have worked with many different CMS’s over the years, but when it comes to creating my own sites I am used to the ‘here is a grid setting out what you can expect for $xxx a year’ and ‘here is a template you can use as-is or manipulate to your hearts content’ business model.

The lack of pricing clarity and proof-of-concept build is kinda putting me off WordPress tbh.

    Thanks

    K

Please read about the different kinds of WordPress:
    http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

The upgrades on WordPress.com allow you to use CSS to change the appearance of the themes available to us on this platform. Basic hosting here is free. You can experiment with the CSS for no charge.

Without a link to your sites I cannot guess which version of WordPress you want/need.
