can I set up new website with my original account, and keep my original blog too
-
Hi, I have a wordpress blog – http://www.benross1.wordpress.com. I want to keep it as, and also create a new blog or website for a small business I am setting up. I would like to use some of the files that are in my current media library.
My questions are:
Do I need to create a new account in order to set up the new website? If not, can you tell me how to set up the new one using the original account?
Can I use the same media library for the blog and the new website?
Thank you ,
Ben Ross

Hi Ben,
You can create a new site within the same account. Log into your current WordPress.com site and head to My Sites at the top. On the left hand side there will be a + button to create a new site like this:
Click that and it will take you to create a new site in the same account.
As for using the same media library unfortunately, this wouldn’t be possible. We’ve had lots of requests for this and it was actually brought up in January of this year to be worked on. I’m sorry I couldn’t help you more with this.
Let me know if you have any questions with this!

Hi again Grace,
just wanted to clarify: if I follow the advice you gave me can I set up a website (as different from a blog?) . i could only see a blog option in the ‘my sites’ link that you directed me to.

Hi Ben,
Please note that the words site and blog are used interchangeably here on WordPress.com. They are one in the same. There’s no separate sign up for a site versus a blog. They’d be exactly the same.
I’m assuming the differences you want between a blog and site would be that you’d want a custom menu and set up a Home page, Contact Page, and other static pages? This can be done by creating a Custom Menu. Then you after you create it you can have a separate Front page (so that it’s not just a list of your posts) and create a separate Posts page. This can by done by going to Settings > Reading in your Dashboard.
If you get your site set up, let me know and I can walk you through the process if you tell me what you’re looking for. :)
Cheers!

Hi Grace,
I’ll be developing the blog over the next few weeks and hopefully won’t need too much support when I get the hang of it again ( it’s been a few years since I made the first one).
Quick question now though, before I get started: I created the domain name: https://oralhistorycompanydotcom.wordpress.com. I wasn’t expecting ‘dot come’ to appear in the url. Have I done something wrong?
Also, I hadn’t thought I’d saved anything when I first set it up – I was just toying with the set up options. Have I committed to anything?
thank you
Ben

Hi Ben!
No worries at all! You can change a site address ending in wordpress.com by following the steps here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/Please note that the final step in changing your site address allows you to keep or discard the old address. If you are changing your site address so that you can use the address for a new site, please be sure to keep the old address.
You may prefer to change the address for your site by registering a custom domain name. This takes “wordpress” out of the site address. You can register a custom domain name for your site here:
https://oralhistorycompanydotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains
You can read more about custom domain names here:

Righto, thanks Grace.
Sounds good.
Can you advise me on which blog option to choose? I’d like one that has similar functions as the one I already have: http://www.benross1.wordpress.com.
I need a static page at the front, with menu on that front page, provision for images, audio files, hyperlinks. In the future I may need video files uploaded.
Not sure if the options have changed since I set that one up. Maybe the free one won’t do what I need?
It’s a very small business at this stage and the blog is primarily to be a source of information about the services offered with some information about previous projects, some testimonials from previous clients.
What do you think?
thank you
Ben

Hi Ben!
Can you advise me on which blog option to choose? I’d like one that has similar functions as the one I already have: http://www.benross1.wordpress.com.
It seems like you’re looking for some advice on choosing a theme:
Looking at your previous site, these are free themes that may be of interest to you:
http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/suits/
http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/motif/
http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/big-brother/
http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentytwelve/
http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/bosco/If you don’t like any of those, tell me a few specifics you are looking for and I’d be happy to take a further look!
You mentioned this:
I need a static page at the front, with menu on that front page, provision for images, audio files, hyperlinks. In the future I may need video files uploaded.
Please note that all themes are able to support what you mentioned above.
In order to have a static front page with a menu, create all the static pages you need first by going to Dashboard > Pages > Add new. Once those are all created, go to Appearance > Menus to create a Custom Menu. Please remember to select a location for your menu. Once the menu is created, please go to Settings > Reading in your Dashboard. Where it says “Front Page displays” instead of Latest Posts, choose A static page and select from the pages you created:
