Can I show a page in the menu without putting a title on the edit page?
-
I’ve chosen a large featured image for the history page. unfortunately the title of the page shows up inside the featured image.
is there a way to have “History Page” show up in the menu and at the same time edit the page so it does not have anything written in the “page title” rectangle at the top of the edit page?
thanksThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m not sure if removing the title will help in this case as your image appears to be overlapping the text area. The only way I know of to fix that would be through adding custom CSS to your site’s theme. You need to have the Custom Design upgrade to do that.
You can post your question in the CSS customisation forum for info on what code will be needed to make this change: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization#postform
See here for more info on purchasing the custom design upgrade:

thank you, kokkieh.
I know if I remove the title that it will eliminate the problem of the overlap – however the page will disappear from the menu.I thought that there might be a way to customize the page so that it did not need a title entered on the edit page but would still show up on the menu with a custom title, but not sure.

If you’ve already confirmed that removing the title will help, try the following: Create a custom menu (Appearance ->Menus) for your site, adding all your pages. You can drag and drop them to rearrange them exactly the way they display now. (If you already have a custom menu, skip to the next paragraph.)
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/After you’ve made sure the custom menu is active, edit the page. Delete the title, but make sure you specify the slug (last part of the URL – at the moment it’s “our-history-2”) so it still remains the same (if you don’t see the Slug module, click on Screen Options and select it). Update the page.
Now head back to Appearance ->Menus. You’ll see the one menu item is now without a name (it might also display thinner than the other menu items). Click on it to expand it, and insert the page title where it says Navigation Label. Save your menu.
Now you should still have the item in your menu, but if you open the actual page you’ll see no title displayed.
On another topic, I notice you don’t have a site title entered. Yes, you have the title in your custom header image, but you should still insert a title under Settings ->General for SEO purposes – that’s where search engines go to look for your site’s title. You can set it to not display on your site by going to Appearance ->Customize ->Site Title.

Thank you very much. That looks so helpful. But before I start to follow your instructions I have one question.
I’m not sure if I have a custom menu or not.I have custom pages within a menu and also regular pages.
I don’t think I ever established a ”custom menu” in the appearance under dashboard. But for a lot of the pages on the menu I have gone to customize and used the link option on the left side of the menu page to enter the url I uploaded to media – e.g. for our association newsletter “on common ground” I think I used that method so the menu page would open with the pdf file in media (if that makes sense)
I learned as I went and so, as you can tell from your suggestion to set up a title, it was trial and error for me much of the time :)
thank you :) -
If you have outside links in your menu then chances are you already have a custom menu. Click on Appearance ->Menus. If there is already a menu there and the blue button says “Save Menu” then you have one. If you don’t, the blue button will say “Create Menu”.
Read the post at the second link I gave you. It explains the custom menu somewhat better than the support doc, including warnings against common errors and some advanced tips.

yes, sorry, I just read the first one of the links you provided me in your last response.
and yes, I followed those steps and checked some of those boxes
And I often click “save menu” as I continue working on this site.
so, indeed, I must have a custom menu as you describe.
whew, – that’s good to know.
I think I will go back and reread all of the wordpress tutorials now that i have a few months experience with this to fill in the gaps in my knowledge.
if the web site is approved by our board then we will upgrade to .com and .org.
Wordpress is a remarkable achievement. I continue to be amazed at how functional it is for someone, like me, who is not familiar with coding.
Thank you for your help. -

If you’re talking about going self-hosted, keep in mind that that option is a tad more complicated than the WP.com setup you have now. For self-hosted WP.org sites if something breaks you have to fix it yourself and you probably will need some knowledge of coding from time to time.
For a full breakdown of the differences between the platforms, see here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If you’re happy with what you can do on WP.com, rather keep your site here and just buy a custom domain for it.

Thank you. Yes! I really appreciate what you are saying because I am convinced that we should not self host. I trust wordpress from the point of view of security and functionality. I may have confused the issue by suggesting that we would name the web site firtmontrosecommons.com and also buy the name firstmontrosecommons.org. (Can we stay with wordpress as host and also buy the additional custom domain of .org or is .org only for those who self host?
I am trying my hardest to persuade the other members of the board that we do not wish to self host. I’ll refer to your link to help make that point when this is discussed:) Thank you for that. I know far too little about how self-hosting works to leave the shelter and security of what WordPress provides :) (Not to mention that self-hosting will unnecessarily eat into our small budget, when WordPress is so easy to use.)
And the additional complications you refer to are unnecessary for what we are capable of or need.
I appreciate your counsel on this.

Your suggestion on using the slug solved the problem perfectly.
All I did was check the slug on page options on the History page and then I removed the title in edit on that page.
i was surprised that I didn’t need to enter the slug’s portion of the url. WordPress seemed to know that already……
Thanks so much, kokkieh. It’s been a pleasure working with you. You explain things very well.

You can register both domain extensions through WP.com and you can have multiple domains pointing to the same blog. And should you wish to register a domain extension not supported by WP.com, you can register it elsewhere and map it to your WP.com blog as well.

Another quiver in your arrow: you mention security and self-hosted sites are more vulnerable to hacking as well. I’m basing this on hearsay, but I’ve heard it said enough that I’m willing to accept it. Here, as long as you have a secure password and don’t give a bunch of people unnecessary admin permissions to the blog (keeping in mind one of them might NOT have a secure password) chances of getting hacked is very small.

And I too am very glad that you have been such a big help!
Sorry to add another comment but I wanted to thank you as well for this:

Best wishes and cheers!
