Can I sign people up for my blog?
-
(possible) legal question here.
Our school created our blog as a communication tool for parents and to replace our current (very problematic) listserv.
Question is: are we allowed to take the parent e-mail addresses that are currently subscribed to our Gmail listserv (with permission) and manually feed them in as followers to our WordPress site??
They consented to communication from the school, but I was wondering if WordPress has any say on this?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Some countries have strict rules on this – so be careful
You can put in a single email address at a time into the subscribe widget – then hit the go button and they will be sent an email with a click here link to subscribe. They will need to confirm they want to subscribe – prevents me from signing you up for blogs you don’t want
There is no way to feed in a list of email addresses – it is an anti-spam feature to prevent a blog from being used as a spam mailer

You can do this via the Follow Blog widget which you add to your sidebar via Appearance -> Widgets in your blog’s Dashboard. If you’re logged out, you’ll see an email field in the widget.
However, they will all receive a confirmation email with an activation link which they must click. If they do not click the activation link, their subscription won’t be activated, and they may flag you for spam content if they are not aware of this.
It would be better to use the existing mailing list to ask them to subscribe to the blog themselves, and to make it easy for them by providing the Follow Blog widget.
