Can I Start Blogging If I am Switching Registrars?
-
Hey all,
I started a wordpress blog, then bought a domain through wordpress (automattic). I am in the process of transferring it over to godaddy for hosting. I have to wait 2 more weeks until the 60 days are up to transfer the registrar.
The tech guy at GoDaddy said I should still be able to upload my custom CSS, and start writing my blog even though the registrar hasn’t been transferred. I am planning on still using the worpress interface even though its hosted by godaddy. I am new to this so I am not exactly sure how to go about it.
Do I upload the custom css here on WordPress? Do I need to buy the wordpress custom css upgrade (maybe that’s a dumb question…)? Can I begin blogging right away? I think I am still waiting the 24 hours until the name/dns transfers(?). Am I able to start my blog this weekend even though the registrar hasn’t finished transferring? And can someone please explain the difference between wordpress.com and .org? I am not even sure which one I registered on and I have been reading they’re completely different.
Thanks guys, I appreciate any help!
Drew

No, your new blog hosted at godaddy will NOT be connected to wordpress.COM in any way. All of your work will be done at godaddy.
With the domain mapping upgrade here, you could point your domain name to godaddy, but it will take 24-72 hours for that to take effect before you can do the installation of wordpress.ORG software at godaddy. You would end up paying $10 for the domain mapping for two weeks of use.
And all questions about the new godaddy hosted blog will have to be made over at http://wordpress.ORG/support/ as that is where the software you will be using is supported.

Thanks for your reply.
I have the domain mapping already purchased and it was mapping to the domain I bought through wordpress/automattic. I believe that I updated the mapping (on my wordpress blog settings) to the new DNS.
Just to clarify, because its not hosted by wordpress anymore means that I am now part of wordpress.org automatically? Do I need to sign up for a new account over there?

Yes, you will have to sign up for a username over at wordpress.ORG in order to post in the forums there. WordPress.COM and wordpress.ORG are not really connected.
If you’ve changed your DNS nameserver stuff here to point to the new blog at godaddy, then in 24-72 hours you should be able to access that account and install the software and such. Typically it takes around 24 hours, but it can be up to 72 in rare cases.

Thanks. I am moving this forum post to wordpress.org under the same title. I appreciate your help!
