can I stop webp image downloads from within WordPress?
-
I’m creating a simple image assets site for a client using default galleries on WordPress.com. Ideally, I’d like it to be really easy for their employees to locate images they want to use and download them in original format, which the default galleries do really well.
However, in Crome, when you drag an image to your desktop, it converts the original jpg format to webp. The only workaround I’ve found so far is to [control+click on Mac / right-click on PC] and “save image as,” with jpg format selected.
Is there any way to force an original format download from within WordPress so this doesn’t have to be painstakingly explained to less-web-savvy users?

I staged a sample page here:

Is there any way to prevent this in WordPress, or do I need to instruct users to right click & save image as?

Ah, yes that’s actually normal and we don’t have a way to stop it.
WebP is a far more efficient image format than JPEG and PNG: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebP
So, when browsers that support it (like Chrome) view your images, we offer WebP images.
