Can I switch my domain back to wordpress?

  • Unknown's avatar

I switched my domain yesterday morning to weebly. Is it too late to come back to WordPress? I didn’t realize I would lose my posts?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Switching back shouldn’t be a problem. I’m not sure if there are any restrictions on how quickly you can do that or if you would have to repurchase the domain mapping upgrade.

Did you try the “regular” domain mapping procedure? http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#instructions-for-mapping-an-existing-domain

If you tried that and it didn’t work let me know and I’ll tag this thread for staff assistance (or you can do it yourself by typing “modlook” under tags in the right column).

It also seems strange to me that you can’t import your content into Weebly. Here’s how you would export your content from the WordPress side: http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/

I did some looking on the Weebly side and I couldn’t find anything about how to import content, but they do have both chat and e-mail support over there so maybe they can help?

I’ve contacted weebly. They said it had to be cut and pasted. I would love to switch back to WordPress and restore my posts. I don’t know how to get help with wordpress. If I had known I wouldn’t have access to my posts, I wouldn’t have switched. Thank you for your help. I’m away from the computer, so I can’t try that link yet.

One other thing. I assumed your original site was hosted on WordPress.com. If that’s the case, your content still available in your account.

If you had a WordPress site hosted elsewhere (usually referred to as a WordPress.org “self-hosted” site) than the situation might be less straight forward, especially if you cancelled your hosting account.

If you aren’t sure which type of WordPress site you had, one way to check is to see if you can access the content of your WordPress site from here: https://wordpress.com/sites

Here’s more info on the difference between WordPress.ORG and WordPress.COM: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    Hey there!

It sounds like your original WordPress site was self hosted, not here at WordPress.com. Do you have an export file from that site?

If you do, head over here and create a site:

    https://signup.wordpress.com/signup/

Then head to the dashboard and go to Tools > Import and select WordPress. There you can import your old site into a WordPress.com site.

Let me know if I can help further!

Okay. I think I have figured out my problem. Thanks for all your help. So, here is the deal. I had a wp blog hosted through dream host. I pointed it from dream host to weebly. When that happened. I logged into wordpress…all posts are gone, but all comments and stats are still there. When I go to dream host. It acknowledges me, but not my domain. When I log into weebly. It doesn’t even have my domain under it’s tab. ARGH. How do I just go back/?

None of the links help me per se, but they did help me to understand everything that I did wrong. Thank you so much.

Since you had a self-hosted site, I’m afraid there isn’t much more we can do for you here, but there is a support forum for WordPress.ORG sites, and they may have more ideas for you there:

    http://wordpress.org/support/

You may also try contacting support at DreamHost, they may be able to walk you through pointing your domain back to the server hosting your WordPress site.

I hope you are able to get it all sorted out.

lizthefair’s suggestion here is exactly right. Contacting DreamHost is your best option.
