  I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  Hi there,

  When you setup a free WordPress.com site you will have a .wordpress.com domain associated with it

  For all features though, including a custom domain you’ll need to upgrade to a paid plan but if you’re just looking to try things out you can do so with a free account.

  @americanshindig, Just adding too, you’ll need the paid plan to go live with your domain. Until then, you can use the free or paid plan to set up the site depending on the features you need. Even transferring the domain to our service won’t make it go live with until you connect it like so:
  https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/
