Can I transfer a domain I own to wordpress?

I own a domain that I’d like to transfer to wordpress. I have already pointed it here but bluehost does not have email forwarding once my hosting expires at the end of the year.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Maia,
Unfortunately, we cannot accept incoming transfers.
Checking into your site though, your current e-mail forwarding (as set here: https://youuniversityonline.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains ) doesn’t require Bluehost’s system to work.
You can transfer your domain name to another registrar ( like namecheap.com, name.com, etc) and everything will continue to work for http://youuniversityonline.com/.
Please let me know if you have any questions or need anything else!

So if I’m understanding correctly, Bluehost can continue to hold the url and I will continue to get my email because I’ve set it up here – even when my hosting at Bluehost is no longer working. Cool. thank you. (Please correct me if I’m wrong)

I believe so (not being aware of the details of Bluehost’s offerings).
If they allow you to renew the domain name without having any hosting, your site and e-mail will continue to work since everything having to do with your domain is being directed to the WordPress.com’s nameserver.
Please let me know if you have any questions or need anything else. Cheers!
