A quick trip to the Support documentation uncovered this:

You do get to pay for hosting when you move to the self-hosted version of WordPress. Check out this page on the WordPress.ORG site http://wordpress.org/hosting/ Make sure you find a host with good support.

You also get the job of doing all the updating, all the troubleshooting, all the maintenance, all the backups. If something goes wrong, you have to fix it.

Backups are very important. I know personally of a couple people who did not do any backups and found out the hard way that their web hosts did not do backups of any data on their servers. On server crash and they lost a couple years worth of posts.

DO NOT go with bargain-basement, promise-you-the-moon hosting. You truly get what you pay for. So some research on hosting companies and how they all rank.

/nod to tsp Most definitely agree on the hosting point.

About updating, I think auto-updating now comes with the latest version of the WordPress.ORG software, so that’s one less thing to worry about. (Also have to wonder how it handles updating with plugins installed, but that’s not a discussion for this forum.)

Auto updating is still sort of a dream, especially for plugins. It doesn’t work yet although it is supposed to, and the auto updating for wordpress itself also seems to be quite iffy. I’ve never gotten it to work.
