can I transform a post into a page?
-
Can I? I have a post which got to be particularly important amongst others and I would like to promote it to a page. The matter is that I have 77 comments and would like to keep them, so I cannot do a simple copy and paste thing. Any hint? THank you
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

@tizianosolignani
Please ignore the first comment I posted above. There may be a time when you publish a static page and then decide it ought to have been a post or visa versa. There is no automatic way of making such a data transfer either of the either the post or page text or of the comments. In both cases it will be a copy and paste move. After you have moved the text from the static page into a new draft post or visa versa and saved the draft, you can use this walk through to move the comments one at a time:
While logged into WordPress > Dashboard sidebar menu > “Comments”
1. Copy comments and commenters’ identification data (username, email address, URL), and paste into a simple text editor.
2. Log out of WordPress, enter the text and submit the new comment as if it was your own.
3. Log back into WordPress > Dashboard sidebar menu > “Comments”
4. Edit the newly submitted comment to remove your identification data and replace them with the original commenters’ identification data (username, email address, URL)
5. Delete the original comment.
6. Repeat until you finish moving all comments.
7. Delete the original static page or post, as the case maybe.N.B. You can also use the same walk through to move comments that have been posted to the wrong post or page.

Interesting, but I do not think I’ll ever do with this post, where comments are 77 :-)
But it could come handy to move a single other comment.
Thank you.

Well it’s ok, I will keep it as a great tip for other cases.
Have a nice day.

One thing that comes to mind is that you can add that post to your navigation bar via a custom menu.

@Tess
Good thinking. :)@tizianosolignani
See here for creating a custom menu and adding a custom link to your post into it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/ -
tizianosolignani,
Just in case you read this thread again, there might be a way to transfer everything without copying and pasting… I’m testing it right now; whether or not my test succeeds, I’ll let you know the results.
-
sure, let me know, I subscribed the post so that I am notified when someone writes on it. Thanks.

Tiziano,
It did work. You can check it out here:
I made on of my posts:
http://csswiz.wordpress.com/2009/10/15/if-you-have-the-wp-com-css-upgrade/Into a page:
http://csswiz.wordpress.com/if-you-have-the-css-upgrade-_-page/Both post and page exist with comments.
Now, there are a couple of things to consider and still test:
a) if you intend to keep your post (like I did in my test) then there isn’t anything else to do.
b) if you intend to _delete_ the post after “converting” it into a page, then I need to run some other tests…
Which of the above you plan to do?
If A, then, once I get home, I’ll write some instructions telling you what items you need to focus on. You’d need to feel comfortable editing XML files, though (since I’m using the Export/Import tools). Also, you do need to do some copying and pasting but nothing compared to copying and pasting each comment.
If you rather not to mess with the XML file, then I think Tess’ option would be the way to go.
Please let me know once you’ve checked my blog so that I can delete the “converted” page.

It’d be interesting to see how you went about it devblog.
However it appears to me that if all what tizianosolignani wanted to do by turning the post into a page was to give it more prominence with one click access from main menu, then Id say he might as well stick with ltess’s idea. And erasing the original post which seems to attract him so many visitors would not be such a wise move. Whereas by just adding a custom link to the menu, his post would have its own one-click access, and the permalink would remain the same, which seems ideal really.

Great points, sunnisme. I think you are right. Maybe the solution Tess provided is definitely the way to go.

Agreed. But you CAN copy and paste an entire comment string, as long as you do it in the visual editor and put it right in the post/page itself. I’ve done it numerous times.
