Can I upgrade my free blog to allow more themes?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am new to WordPress (12 months) and I am currently running on the Free feature. I feel it is time to improve my theme and download a new theme but the only way to acheive this to pay a WordPress Host, which enables my to download a new theme. I have no problem with this but my current wordpress “free” domain name (i.e.) xxx.wordpress.com is not available as a standalone xxx.com domain name.

Is there an option to keep my free account, but “purchase” any sort of upgrade to allow more themes?

Or alternatively, is there a way I would purchase a WordPress host but keep the xxx.wordpress.com blog name?

    Best regards,

    Stephen

    No

    No

zzz.wordpress.com names are for use only on WordPress.COM – you can purchase Domain Forwarding ( I think that is the right name ) – that will redirect visitors to your WordPress.COM site to your self-hosted site.

The only upgrade we have here for changing the look of a theme is the CSS upgrade. It does not allow adding new themes, and it does not allow you to add functionality. CSS allows you to change the styling of the existing themes here. That is all.

Themes from outside wordpress.COM are for self-hosted blogs and before a theme can be used here it has to be modified and checked for security issues, and in some cases certain theme features are removed for security reasons. There is also a lot of things that have to be added so that the theme will support all the wordpress.COM unique features.

To add to what mike99362, the feature to have a “__.wordpress.com” type address redirect to your self-hosted WordPress.ORG blog is actually called Offsite Redirect and here’s more info about it:
