Can I use a domain I already own on my WordPress site?

    Hi, I have built a free website using WordPress, and have the ‘wordpress’ reference within the domain name, i.e. ‘https://xxxxxxxxxxxxx.wordpress.com/.
    However I have bought a separate domain name using GoDaddy and would like my WordPress site to use this domain. Is there any way this can be done for free, or do I need to purchase a plan of some sort in order to do this?

    I’ve been advised by GoDaddy that it should be possible for me to use the domain I bough on the WordPress site and without any additional cost. Please could you advise how I could do this? According to GoDaddy, I simply need to let the WordPress support team to know that I need to update the Hosting IP address to my domain so that it will work for me. They’ve said that if you’re unable to do this, then please could you provide the hosting IP address so that I can get GoDaddy to carry this out?

    Any help on this would be really appreciated.

    There are two ways to use a domain you already own here at WordPress.com:

    Mapping allows you to keep the domain registered with your current domain registrar and direct it to your WordPress.com site: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/

    A transfer would allow to manage both your site and domain from the same place: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/

    Both will require any paid plan to make them the site’s primary address https://wordpress.com/support/domains/#set-a-primary-address and all paid plans include a free domain registration, transfer, or mapping: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

    Thanks for coming back on this. Is it possible to transfer my domain from GoDaddy to WordPress even though I only bought the domain through GoDaddy around 10 days ago? I’ve read somewhere that you can’t transfer a domain within 60 days of it being registered – is that genuinely the case?

    Nice research there! You are correct; all newly purchased domains are not allowed to be transferred until they have been owned for 60 days.

    You can still connect the domain to a site you create here, which is detailed in the instructions my colleague linked to above.
