Can I use a domain name that no longer exists?

I’d like to change the first part of my blog URL (the “johnjsal” part) to another name that apparently no longer exists. Going to that URL gives the message that “The authors have deleted this blog.” But when I try to use that domain name to create a new address for myself, it says “That hostname cannot be added to this blog.”
Can I not reuse a name that is no longer being used? Is the name just forever unavailable? :(

Deleted = = Gone Forever
You can’t – gone is gone forever and WordPress.COM does not recycle names, You need to choose a bit different name or buy a custom domain and map it.
