Can I use a domain purchased elsewhere?

    Hi there, since the prices of your plans have gone up and I currently have no income, I was wondering if I could purchase a domain from another source, but then use it for my current site? I feel it would be useful to have a proper web-address, since I am not getting much traffic, but I guess that is just be because free sites do not get registered with search engines in order to give people an incentive to upgrade, so having a domain name may not actually make any difference…

    Hi there!

    While you can purchase a domain here at WordPress.com without a plan, to have your domain be your primary domain, you would still need a paid plan. So if you purchase the domain through us, it would redirect to your free *.wordpress.com URL.

    If you purchase the domain elsewhere, you have to purchase a paid plan to use the domain here.

    However, if you wait a week or two, there will be other options than those currently showing on our plans page. Unfortunately, I can’t provide any more details than that, but keep an eye out on our blog for any upcoming announcements.
