Can I use a plugin I just bought from UpdraftPlus for $85?

  • Unknown's avatar

Seeking to back up all my work on my two WP websites, I have just purchased the above plugin. There was no “add new plugin” label on my dashboard I was told to use. Then I read on a WP guidance page that WP does not use my purchase for security reasons. So I’m suspecting another error on my part. Many thanks for putting up with me so kindly.

    Hey there.

Indeed, plugins can’t be used with WordPress.com. We do have some features and functionality that might match what your plugin was meant to do.

Any specific plan I can help you with?

On the other hand, if you really need to use a specific plugin you can migrate to a self–hosted instance and install Jetpack, which enables lots of WordPress.com goodies on your self–maintained blog, mixing the best of both worlds.

Let me know if I can help you with this.

Thank you very much diegoe. I will take action to refund.

What I was trying to do was back up my two WP sites so that all my work will be preserved from attack or other misadventure. If you can help me with this I’ll be most grateful.

I see. WordPress.com offers a few benefits like Revisions and increased security, but there’s no backup function.

Your account will be safe as long as you keep a hard to guess password, and if you want you can also add Two Step Authentication to your account:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/security/two-step-authentication/

This will require you to have access to a cellphone to be able to log into your account, it will work like bank’s physical tokens or keys.

If you would like to have a self–hosted installation in the future, you might consider using VaultPress:
    http://vaultpress.com/

This is a full backup service for WordPress blogs hosted outside of WordPress.com. It’s also provided by Automattic, so you’d be in good hands :)

Anyway, that’s just something to consider in an eventual future if you ever want to host a site yourself.

    Hope this helped!
