can I use a theme that is not proposed by WordPress?
-
Hi!
I’ve been trying on my own of two hours now and I can’t find the solution. Note that I am new and don’t really know how to go into coding mode…
I have found a nice theme that I would like to use for my blog (http://btemplates.com/2010/blogger-template-papyrus/), but I don’t know how to “upload” it on WordPress. I have tried various ways, including putting its code in the CSS window (don’t laugh), but nothing works.
Thanks for your help!!

(no, the blog I need help with is https://lagaleredenoe.wordpress.com, but you can go and comment on the biodiversitydynamics blog, if you want to see the kind of things I do ;-) )

The answer is no. The only themes we can use on WordPress.com hosted blogs are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and in your dashboard at > Appearance > Themes
There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs for security reasons and we cannot:
upload any third party themes,
create child themes,
create our own themes,
edit templates,
create own own layouts,
or use stylesheets from other themes.Relevant support docs:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/You cannot upload any third party themes into a WordPress.COM hosted blog so be clear on that. There is no upgrade you can purchase here that changes that reality.
WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can create themes, upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, and edit the database, etc. If you want FTP access and to install plugins or third party themes into a site then you will have to hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up your own WordPress.org install. Hi Franck, I’m not sure we have any themes quite like that one, but you can scan through all our free themes here:
https://wordpress.com/themes/type/free/
As timethief mentioned, it’s not possible to upload third-party themes here on WordPress.com, but we do have an excellent collection of curated themes here so hopefully you’ll find one you like.

thank you very much for your very clear and complete answer!
I just wish someone licensed will create this “prehistoric-looking” style like the one I showed! :-)
thanks again!

I thought I saw something sort of like that a couple of years back here – with the wood look – note also that some themes let you put custom images for the background or around the edge – or change the color of the edge
-
auxclass has a great point – with some customization you could get one of the existing themes looking more like what you’re after.

The Journal theme is similar, and allows for a custom background if you don’t want the default woodgrain.
-
ifmomsaysok – Adventure Journal is a great suggestion!
