can i use myblog.wordpress.com/YYYY/ to build a custom archives page?
at the moment i use a page-template provided by the pressrow-theme that shows a monthly archive. but as i write one post per month a yearly archive would be much more useful. can i use the myblog.wordpress.com/YYYY/ urls to build a custom archives page?
can i rely on this (myblog.wordpress.com/YYYY/) url to provide a page with a list of all entries that i made that year? -
That would require access to the underlying theme files and we do not have access to those.

You could create your own manually and then update it each time that you create a new post. Once you get it set up and up to date, it would not be that much work to keep up on.

It looks like it is working fine to me.
Another solution I just thought of is to assign the year as a category to your posts. In other words, apply “2009” to all posts for 2009. Then in the archive page, link the text for the year to the appropriate year category. That way you would not have to update things manually, it would be done automatically (except at the beginning of each new year you would have to add the new year to the Archive page linked to the new year category.

but the http://hoertauf.wordpress.com/2009/ page is also just there, i did not create it. that was my initial question. can i rely on this page to be here automatically?

Hmmm, that is interesting. I think you have discovered that you can list all the posts from a chosen year by just using the YEAR/ after the main blog URL. I didn’t know it would work that way. I had never thought to see if it worked.
I’m glad you found this little “easter egg.”
My feeling is that those pages will be there, generate automatically, and not disappear.

Yes, you definitely can rely on these URLs being available, they are automatically handled by WordPress and are always available on all blogs. You might also notice that you can do the same thing with months if you like: http://myblog.wordpress.com/2009/01/
