Not on the WP.com site. You have to use one of the hundred or so themes provided.

I’ve used a programme called Artisteer to create a theme for my self hosted website which was set up with the WP.org software.

I Ian, I am thinking of customsizing my theme also. I have been reading alot about this Artisteer. Have you used it? I have a 3 colum site, I want to change the header and I want to use a post or picture viewer at the top that constantly is changing, can you do this with Artisteer? One of the reasons I want a picture viewer is so I can display my flickr pictures which I intend to make into a separate photoblog.

I know you can do much theme change at wordpress.com. I have downloaded wordpress and am going to put it on my hosted web site and then put up my blog there.

    Thanks

@girlhoneyy, while we may be limited to the 100+ themes available to WordPress.com, many of the newer themes are amazingly customizable with backgrounds, headers, custom menus, etc. It’s only limited to your imagination within the confines of the framework.

If you know how to work with CSS, you can change an existing theme almost completely (as long as you don’t need to change the underlying PHP or HTML). There are also several sandbox CSS themes just waiting for you to turn them into something spectacular with the paid CSS upgrade.

Have a look at the Theme showcase and you’re sure to be inspired. http://theme.wordpress.com/

@girlhoneyy, you can certainly use photoshop to create graphics and images to use on your site here, and if you know CSS, there is a lot that can be done as Jennifer has suggested.

To all who say like this: WordPress.com also uploads attractive themes regularly. From my point of view, Twenty Ten is so great theme that I can’t praise it in words. Now WORDPRESS’ is also offering premium themes. Are you a better theme developer than WordPress Theme Team, that you can build a nice theme for your blog, with any program? Off course not..

@wpgaurav-with all due respect…If you want to customize an existing WordPress.com theme, it can certainly be done in a number of ways. If you want to purchase a Premium theme, you can do that too. No need to get down on people who want to develop their own theme from scratch. They just need to know that they can’t upload such a theme to WordPress.com. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/ Cheers!

And I’ve see some people here, who have had very little CSS experience, do some amazing customizations of themes here. Many want something that looks completely unique. They don’t want it to look like everyone else’s site.

Yeah.. I forgot about CSS Customizations.

Lots of good advice here guys. I will have to try and bite the bullett and get into css customization through coding. I have done some coding with dreamweaver in css and html, mostly tutorials. I seems like dreamweaver doesn’t work real well with wp, I know you can import the files into dreamweaver, but there is alot more coding it seems than using something like css editor in wordpress.

I have a webhost to host my blogs and have downoloaded wp for it, I was just looking around and I found these programs like Artisteer and theme dream(for cs4 dreamweaver).

I was wondering if anybody has used a theme creator software? I would like to place a picture or post viewer at top of blog. I have seen software like SimpleViewer for wordpress.

    Thanks for help.

I have a webhost to host my blogs and have downoloaded wp for it

Please read this so you comprehend the differences between free blogs being free hosted by wordpress.COM, which are the only blogs we provide support for on this forum, and software installs from wordpress.ORG for self hosting, which we do not provide support for on this forum. You must post to http://wordpress.ORG/support as we cannot help you here.

Thanks timethief. I do understand. I am just in a transitional phase here, actually posting questions at both wordpress.com and .org.

Currently the blogs I have are nothing but wordpress.com, blogs. If I want to modify them I will have to use the css editor in toolbox or use sandbox. I know it seems themes and other functions of wp.com can only be changed cosmetically, if you want to do further changes I will need to work with wp.org and my web host. I have downloaded wp and will install it at my webhost.

    Thanks for help.

If you intend to start here ate wordpress.com and then import your blog content into a wordpress.org install these things are important to know. wordpress.com is a WP-MU blogging platform. The themes here were all originally coded to run on free standing wordpress.org software installs. In order to run on wordpress.com software they were “adapted” and some features were eliminated as this is a WP_MU blogging platform we cannot access and edit the underlying php and html in the templates. The themes we use here are all derived from shared templates. You cannot export and import any theme you have on a wordpress.com blog into a wordpress.org install. You will have to locate the version that runs on wordpress.org software.

CSS editing at wordpress.com is theme specific. that means that if and when you move blog content to a wordpress.org install you will have to re-do any CSS editing you did on the wordpress.com blogs. It’s not transferable.

At wordpress.com purchasing an annually renewable CSS upgrade will allow you ONLY to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but it does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. It does not allow you to remove footer links to the theme designer or to wordpress.com. Also note that as CSS is theme specific, cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.
