  If I upgrade my wordpress.com blog so I can customize it, can I use this theme:

  No.

  If you purchase the CSS upgrade it does not mean you can paste in themes from elsewhere on the web, even WordPress themes. It is more like writing in a foreign language than anything else. Practice making changes in the free preview and once you KNOW you can do exactly what you want, then purchase the upgrade.

  So, if I want to use that theme, how would I? It says it is for wordpress…

  Sorry…I really don’t understand wordpress yet.

  Those themes are for self hosted blogs that are using the software downloaded for wp.org. See the sticky at the top of the forums for the differences between the two wordpresses.

  And if your blog is hosted here, please link your user name to you blog as explained in the sticky at the top of the forum:

  Go into your dashboard -> users -> your profile -> then scroll down to ‘contact info’. In the spot where it says ‘website’ fill in the address of your blog and save the changes.
  Now… when you comment here and on other blogs, your name will link to your blog. If you do this before you post your request for help, it will allow forum volunteers to be able to help you quicker since they won’t have to ask you for a link and wait until you come back to post one.

  Maybe Im being an idiot here, but doesn’t wordpress already offer these themes. So can’t you just activate the pool theme for example and just buy the upgrade and customize that theme.

  aw, yes you can. But the vast majority of bloggers don’t know HTML, let alone CSS. It’s recommended that if you don’t know CSS, don’t buy the upgrade. There’s no official support for it, and the forum volunteers who understand it are few and far between.

  If you do want to go the upgrade route, you can play around all you want on your blog, it just won’t show up live on your site. To save your changes, you have to pay.
