Can I use wordpress to host my domain?
-
Okay, so for the last couple of years, I’ve had godaddy hosting my domain, and have paid for the 13$ to have wordpress redirect to it…. My godaddy account is expired (I’m inside the 14 day grace period), and I’m trying to find out if wordpress can carry my domain AND do the redirect…. I’d rather just pay one company for my website, rather than 2…. Can I do that? can wordpress both host a domain name AND redirect to it? Or do I still need to have godaddy or some other carry the domain name and then pay wordpress to redirect?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, WordPressdotcom does not accept incoming domain transfers, so if you want to use your existing domain, you’ll need to renew it at your current registrar. Never let a domain you are using expire.
In order to use your domain name with WordPressdotcom, it requires a paid upgrade plan which includes domain mapping. Here’s more about our upgrade plans and domain mapping:

Is that new? I’ve had the same domain and same plan with wordpress for 2 years. I’ve always been allowed to use my domain name, without having a monthly premium plan through wordpress… what has changed?

There are no monthly payment plans for any upgrades. http://wordpress.com/pricing/
Stand alone upgrades were discontinued over a year ago. Now we need to register a plan and the price has changed.
You can use the Personal Plan, yes, but you need to add the plan first. If you add the domain first, Premium is selected automatically.
Go to My Site ->Plans and buy the Personal Plan, and then you can go back and claim your free domain at My Site ->Domains ->Add.

Thanks, Timethief. That’s very frustating that this wasn’t communicated to members with indvidual services…. and more frustrating that the system *still allowed me to make the purchase, in spite of not having a paid plan*.
This is a hobby site for me, I can justify 30$ a year for the domain and the mapping, but I’m not sure I can justify another $60 a year for a premium plan in order to utilize that $30 a year.
I’ll be pushing for a refund on the mapping service, and I’ll be looking into other blog sites to be moving my blog over to…
This is very disappointing, to say the least.

Edit: 48$…. not 60$…. but still, the price just went from 15 to 63$ for a person to map their site? That’s a nonsense garbage decision from the programmers. I get that they need to get paid, but that’s a spit in the eye. over %400 increase without even communicating it….. not good service at all. For that, I can make go-daddy’s awful website structures work.

Edit 2: I guess domain mapping is included in the monthly plan? so…. why it’s a separate option at all anymore is beyond me…. So i guess instead of $48 plus $15, it’s just $48… so it’s only %300+ price increase without communicating it… so it’s more like a spit in the face, with some of it splashing in the eye… rather than a direct spit to the eye.
That’s a bit better, I suppose…
Thanks for all of your answers, again, timethief. I’m really just ranting now, but I really do appreciate your answers.
