Can I use WordPress without an annual subscription? (Please read me message below).

I own a website http://www.careerpowerresume.com, coded in HTML, but I have a blog on this site done in WordPress. My web designer created the blog. At the present time, I don’t want to create a new WordPress site. I’d like to copy and paste or, perhaps, create my blog posts in WordPress and copy/transfer the posts to my website’s blog. I will probably write 1 or 2 posts per week. Why do I need a $180 annual subscription if I’m not going to create a new blog on the WordPress platform? Please tell me if I have other options. Three years ago, someone told me WordPress was FREE. Or if not, can I have the $15 extracted from my debit card on a monthly basis?

  • Hi Doug,

If you already have a blog powered by WordPress, then you don’t need to create another one here on WordPress.com. Unless you want to host your blog here on WordPress.com.

Please note that the WordPress software is free for anyone to use. WordPress.com on the other hand is a hosting provider that uses the WordPress software to power the sites it hosts.

    ftat,

Thanks. But I have one other question:
When I try to access/use the WordPress platform, I am not able to bypass the select the two pay plan options and USE WordPress to create a post for my blog which is on my website. HOW do get on the WP platform to do this?

I had the same question but just found out today and saw the small lettering near the top of that plan page “click here for a free site”…something similar to those words.

I will butt in this conversation if it’s okay. I have my Free blog set up, I have written a post and published it. I have written About Me and Contact pages and published those but I am told by email my site has not launched. In the upper left corner it says my site is “coming soon”.

When I follow those steps sent by email from WP to launch my site, it is only two pages and the final page being the Plan Page where I have to choose one of two payment type plans.

How do I get my free WordPress blog launched to the public?

  • Hi there,

I am not able to bypass the select the two pay plan options and USE WordPress to create a post for my blog, which is on my website.

To clarify, when you say “blog, which is on my website,” you are https://careerpowerresume.com/publications/ yes? From what I can see, this is a self-hosted WordPress site, which are sites that you create on a “traditional web host.” In this case, that site is hosted on GoDaddy and careerpowerresume.com.

We are not connected directly with GoDaddy (we are both providers of WordPress hosting), so we are not able to help with that site. The content you publish on https://careerpowerresume.wordpress.com/ is not pushed to that other site since they are not connected.

Are you still in contact with your web designer? If so, I’m guessing they set up this WordPress blog for you and will be able to help. You may also wish to try the “lost password” link on this login page for your self-hosted blog: https://careerpowerresume.com/publications/wp-login.php

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks to all of you who responded to my questions last weekend. The last comment from “Jerry,” I think, helps explain what I needed to know.

I’ve tried to reach my web designer (she’s embroiled in a lawsuit). That’s what she told me the last time we spoke about a month ago. I need her help, but she is not returning my calls.

She holds “the keys,” to my website. Yes, it’s hosted by GoDaddy through her; she simply marks up the hosting fee a bit to improve her profitability. Now I wish that I had retained that control. I have another business relationship with GoDaddy. Perhaps, I should call them and explain my situation and urgent need. I’ve been the owner of the website: careerpowerresume.com for 20 years.

I didn’t realize that I could download the FREE WordPress software (WordPress.org) as a separate entity from WordPress.com. For me, that’s a revelation. But it seems to require so many steps and technical requirements (and I’m not tech-savvy). I’m in Charlotte, N.C. Does anyone have any suggestions for help in doing this appropriately? I need to copy and paste blog posts (or create them on my blog which is on my website), but I need to use the WordPress software. Is there a service that can download this for me?

    Can anyone help?

    Doug

  • @slacker70, I think you might have a different issue: make sure you aren’t selecting a custom (“free with plan”) paid domain. You should be able to launch your site then. If you need more help, let us know :)

  • Doug, for your situation, I’m sorry — that sounds tricky! If your web designer isn’t able to help you because she’s too busy, would she relinquish the “keys” to you?

In the meantime, you’d be welcome to start a blog portion of your site (the part you’d update with new articles every few days) for now, if you’d like, that you can add to your site later once your web master is freed up:
    https://wordpress.com/support/five-step-blog-setup/

You might even be able to copy the other parts of the site here.

Also: you don’t necessarily need the Pro plan. It just depends on what features you’re after: https://wordpress.com/pricing

Just know our hosting includes SSL, WordPress maintenance, security, and support as well, which is why it’s different from just standard hosting.

Let us know if you have any questions!

    supernovia,

Thanks for the recommendations. My sole purpose in posting articles on my existing blog is to improve my local Google rankings (previously my site was ranked # 1 or # 2 — and never lower than 3), but now because a national competitor (in my industry we call them “production mills”), has entered my market, my rankings have plummeted. I get between 0-2 calls weekly. As you probably know, on Google new quality content is “king.” How can a “free-standing” WordPress blog help my website’s Google rankings?

When you say, I “might even be able to copy the other parts of the site here,” what do you mean? Do you mean copy new blog content from my new WordPress blog to the blog on my website, or copy my existing blog to my new WordPress blog (in progress)?

Also, I don’t know how to use the WordPress.org software. Last night I was going to download the software (WordPress 6.0.1), but it seems that it’s not as easy and simple as I thought. There’s a 12-page instruction sheet that references other hosting requirements, including PHP 7.4 or greater or MySQL 5.7 or greater. I am a writer, not a technical wizard.

Is it easier to create content on WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org or, perhaps, I’m just so feverishly flummoxed.

Any thoughts? Can you help answer these questions?

    Thanks,
    Doug

  • Hello there,

As you probably know, on Google new quality content is “king.” How can a “free-standing” WordPress blog help my website’s Google rankings?

Content certainly is king, but personally, I think that is just part of the story. The other part is promoting that story and building that following.

This is a guide we recommend on building traffic to a site: https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-more-views-and-traffic/

This is a good guide on building the community surrounding your content: https://en.support.wordpress.com/grow-your-community/ so that you’ve got a baseline of good, reliable followers who you can rely on.

Do you mean copy new blog content from my new WordPress blog to the blog on my website, or copy my existing blog to my new WordPress blog (in progress)?

This is really up to you in which order you’d like to do things. Ideally you’d like to order things so that it will accomplish the end goal.

Is it easier to create content on WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org or, perhaps, I’m just so feverishly flummoxed.

Understandle! What you’re experiencing is one of the downsides of using the free open source software (WordPress.org) – there’s more pros and cons here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

With WordPress.com, it’s more or less click and go – when it comes to making the site itself, and then you add the content as you go.

This is how you would get started with WordPress.com https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-started-with-wordpress-com/

I’m hoping this is all useful!

Last evening I created a new post for my
blog. I previewed it, edited the article and hit the publish button. The WP platform (.com) indicates that it has been “published,” with the date “27 July 2022 9:14 p.m.” But the article does not appear on my blog. What did I do wrong?

Are you now talking about the site here at WordPress.com https://careerpowerresume.wordpress.com/ which has no connection with your other site at Godaddy? The site here still hasn’t been launched (via settings).

  • Doug, I can see you’ve put a lot of work into this. I’m going to reach out by email to see if we can sort this out.

  • Unknown's avatar

No. The site I mistakenly set up a couple of weeks ago, but did not launch, is not relevant to my needs. When I logged in last evening, I used the username and password affiliated with my GoDaddy hosted site: http://www.careerpowerresume.com and this site is where I want last night’s post to migrate
What do I do? Also, I’m trying to learn to use WordPress so I’m less dependent upon my web designer.
    Doug

  • Hi @wordoracle

As mentioned above we’re not connected to sites at GoDaddy (both our companies are independent providers of WordPress sites) so it is not possible to publish a blog post on your WordPress.com site and have it show up on your GoDaddy site.

To do that you need to regain direct access to careerpowerresume.com, which as I understand you are not able to do, due to the way your web designer is managing your site.

I think I can speak for the other members of staff on this thread when I say that we all feel bad about your situation, but I do need to underscore that there is nothing we can do on this end to help.

What we can help with is getting you set up with a replacement site hosted here with us on WordPress.com, with all the advantages of the in-house site support we provide. Sadly though we’re unable to help with careerpowerresume.com

If you wish to move forward with careerpowerresume.wordpress.com as a replacement site let us know and we are happy to help

  • Doug, I also want to point out: if you want to set up the site here with our help, you can point the domain to our service.

Then we’ll be better able to help. Again, here’s the difference between the free WordPress software, and our services:

The article that I created and posted on WordPress.com (but that did not migrate as I intended to my GoDaddy hosted site) is titled, “Getting Your Resume Noticed by the Hiring Manager.”
