Can II use my blog name again

  • Unknown's avatar

I still have not been able to view my post. I just set up the blog yesterday and wrote a post. I then clicked view (at top near name) and it looked fine. I then exited and typed my address parentingonthelevel.wordpress.com I only get the header and the blue bar that says Dashboard is there. I got wonderful advice last night but it didn’t help.

    My main questions today are:

When I started my blog, I used my domain — actually it is http://www.parentingonthelevel.com. If I discontinue this blog, does that mean I will never be able to use parentingonthelevel as a blog again. I know that I will still be able to use my .com as that is where my different stuff about my book by the same name is.

I need the blog for questions and answers about parenting issues associated with the book but I am completely ignorant about most everything on this side of the computer issue. I am somewhat an expert on MS Office applications in particular Word, Access, and Excel as well as QuickBooks and various tax preparation software. Is there a tutorial that goes step by step over the things you should know and do in creating a blog?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a lot of work to do before Support opens up on Monday.

So this is your wp.com blog? http://parentingonthelevel.wordpress.com/

Once you delete that blog you will NEVER be able to use it again.

Here are a couple links that should get you going:

Thanks carocat for your quick response. Does never be able to use it again mean just on wp.com or does it apply to any blog service?

I’ve made note of your links and will go there and try “to become more educated”.

    http://www.parentingonthelevel.com./ isn’t the same as http://parentingonthelevel.wordpress.com/

The first site links to a site abotu the book and the second one is your wp.com blog. If you select the second one you will never be able to reuse http://parentingonthelevel.wordpress.com/ again.

http://www.parentingonthelevel.com./ is your own personal site however, completely unrelated to wp.com and the support forum.

Having just read your other thread have you been able to access your blog at all? Have you tried different browsers?

WordPress.com name blogs once “deleted” cannot be used again, but you can associate your domain name http://www.parentingonthelevel.com with another blog here on wordpress.com or on another host for that matter since as long as that blog is registered to you it gives you the right to use that name anywhere you want!

Thank you so very much Trent and Carocat. You are great for taking the time to help a newbie. I actually went through del.icou.us (I think I got the periods right — maybe not) on my web host (HostMonster) when I did the wordpress.blog. Somebody had told me to do that. Don’t know why.

I am reading a chapter out of Blogging for Dummies about hosting my own blog by using WordPress software. I feel this is the best way for me but I have to figure out how to do it.

No, Carocat, I haven’t been able to see my post. Everyone else can see it (probably) but I can’t. I also don’t understand the blue bar being there with the dashboard. Is this on mine or does that mean anyone can click dashboard and go in? I’m sure that is not supposed to be possible. But even then, I can only see the header.

PS – I have refreshed, rebooted, and in general gone away from everything before trying to sign back in.

We went through the browser thing and more. It’s baffling:

@casuesmith – After some sleep something occurs to me. You said you see the post twice in Manage Posts. Please try one more thing. Copy the text of that post to Notepad (so you don’t lose anything) and then delete BOTH posts you see in the dashboard. Then create and publish the post again using the same title for the post.

This has worked with pages and might work with a post.

Only you see your dashboard or navigation bar. Not to worry. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks ellaetta!. Now I don’t have to worry about that darn dashboard. People on the .com side of things have warned repeatedly about not letting people in to see your entire file structure.

I am on my way to try the delete thing. I have already saved the post. Not that it is all that important but in my quest for knowledge, I copy and paste everything. I have an elaborate system set up under Information that allows me to go back and read and reread info until I get it through my thick head.

I am such a dummy. I meant to ask. Is it possible to see forum posts in real time without going off the page and coming back?

  • Unknown's avatar

Please stop denigrating yourself. You are not a dummy. (btw, re: that book. You are not hosting your own blog with WordPress. WordPress is your host. They’re two different animals, but that’s a distinction for later, k? :) I mention it only because some of the information about self-hosting will not apply to you and that could lead to further frustration if, for example, you’re looking for plugins. We don’t use them on this platform.)

Yes, you can subscribe to the RSS feed of this topic. Look up top in your browser bar for an orange square with white curved lines. Click on it and follow the prompts.

/belated nod to carocat and trent. Still on first cup of coffee.

YEAH!!! It works. Thanks so much to everyone for all their gracious help.

I think I know one thing that might have happened. After it came up okay, I pressed the About tab. Since there is nothing on that yet, the page went blank (obviously). At the top of the header, you could barely see a little gray line on the far left. I clicked on it and the blog came back. It might be possible that when I wasn’t getting anything last night it was on about. Anyway, I will know to watch that in the future.

Again, let me say how great everyone has been here. Undoubtedly, I will have more questions in the future. It is a foregone conclusion for a newbie as “new” as I am.

    What worked? Deleting and re-creating?

Whatever, I’m so glad to hear it! You’re on your way and when you have time to read the information at the links carocat provided, you’ll be off and running well.

    Happy blogging!

I deleted and put it back on. But I think it may of been the about tab that I mentioned. I remember seeing the lines up there when it was blank last night but didn’t do anything about it.

    Have a good weekend.

BTW – I have already saved the links carocat provided and will be studying them shortly.

Glad to hear you got it sorted. :)
