Can "Like" be spam?
-
In the past two days, I received notification that 6 different people clicked on the ‘Like’ button for one of my posts. http://yewnique.wordpress.com/2011/07/17/40/ The email notification suggest that they are all from Cumming, Georgia, USA.
However, my blog stats has not gone up. Neither do these visitors show up in my Live Traffic Feed. Also, when I look at the stats details, there is no indication of any visitor to that blogpost.
How can this be?
Thanks.

A user have to have a WordPress.com account to “like” a post, and the Likes themselves on link to the user’s Gravatar profile, so the likelihood of it being spam is very nill.
It is possible, but they really won’t get anything out of it.

I’m wondering what is the likelihood that they are all from the same place.
Also, if they really did visit my blogpost, why doesn’t it show up in my stats?
-
They would have to visit your blog to like it, so they would have increased your view stats, but the stats could have been a bit behind. I do see well more than 6 visits on that day, so I’m sure they were recorded.

That does seem rather odd, but it’s impossible to Like a post without being logged in to a WordPress.com account and viewing the post itself.
More than likely, they’re running security software to block the tracking script.

All six people, all from the same area, all within 48 hours, all liking the same post?
It seems weird to me.

It does seem weird, I do agree, but there’s no payoff for a spammer (since the link goes to their empty Gravatar profile), and it’s an awful lot of work to register an account and visit the post just to have no payoff.
