can not customize header with my pdf file

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a pdf file that I want to use as the header for my website instead of the photo given with the theme format. When I try to ‘select file’ or ‘drop file’, nothing happens. The on-line tutorial examples look NOTHING like the format I see. I’ve been struggling with this for 2 hours. Any suggestions?

re: http://wordfoolblog.wordpress.com/ and any wordpress.com blog.
That’s not possible. All custom header images must be these file types only
    .jpg
    .jpeg
    .png
.gif and they must be uploaded individually into your media library, they cannot be embedded in PDFs or any other documents.

For your theme set up instructions go to https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/hemingway-rewritten/

Featured Images are 676 wide by unlimited height on Sticky posts, and 1280 by 416 as header images on single posts and pages.

Well, according to the directions on the “choose image” screen, pdf files are allowed. Guess I’m too stupid to know what to do next

Yes you can upload that whole ding dong PDF document file, but no your cannot use any image in the PDF as a header image.

Great. And BTW, referring to the artwork I unwittingly saved in a pdf format as ‘ding dong’ really helps, too. Not all of us are MIT grads with a major in computer science. I’ll stumble onward, on my own, now.

    @karenmhk,
Using your description as a guide, I went through the process of trying to update the header image on a test blog using a PDF. I think I see where your frustration came from. In the Customizer, I clicked Header Image, then Add New Image. I clicked Upload Files and dragged a PDF document onto the screen (because as you noted, the text on that screen said PDFs are allowed). The file uploaded and was already selected so I clicked Select and Crop. That took me to a Crop Image page with a broken image graphic. And I was stuck. The blue button changed to Crop. I clicked it and an error message showed up, “There has been an error cropping your image.”

While I did happen to know a PDF wouldn’t work, it was good to see the workflow through the eyes of a (frustrated) newcomer. I think it worthwhile to let a staff member know about the issue so I’ve tagged this thread for their attention. Perhaps they’ll pass it along to a developer to make improvements.

If you run into any other stumbling blocks, please start a new topic and we’ll see what we can do to help out.

To micawbr: Thanks for taking the time to sleuth. The kindness of strangers is always welcome here.

Thanks for that feedback! The media uploader doesn’t distinguish between media that’s being uploaded for your header image and media that you might want to use elsewhere, so I can see how that’s a bit confusing while you’re trying to upload a header image. I’ll let our team know about that confusion in case there’s something we can do to clarify that.

In the meantime, you’ll need to save your artwork in a .jpg/.jpeg, .gif, or .png file format to use it as your custom header image. If you can’t resave the artwork directly, you may be able to convert the PDF file to an image file format. For example, if you have Adobe Acrobat they have instructions for doing that here:
