Can one access functions.php page for Ecto for free?
-
Can I access functions.php on the Ecto theme if i’m not paying for the customizable version of WordPress.com? I’ve seen in other WordPress forums that I just need to access Dashboard(/WP Administrator) > Appearance > Editor. But i think these instructions are old as that’s not a valid path. Can I edit functions.php for Ecto for free at all?
Main objective: removing “Protected:” from all my password-protected pages on my wedding website which I would not like the world to be able to access.
Thanks in advance.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

WordPress.com users do not have access to functions.php on their sites regardless of any paid upgrade.

You may be able to remove that with the Custom Design upgrade which is included in the Premium bundle which costs $99/year. https://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/
You can ask about hiding the display of this in the CSS Customization forum https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization
If the purpose of your website it is limiting access only to select viewers, you can change your entire site visibility settings to Private and then invite viewers. No paid upgrade is needed. Your invited viewers will, however, have to create a WPcom username account in order to access your Private site. https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

Although that’s frustrating to hear, thank you very much justjennifer for the reply.
I’m also out of luck if I want to add a plugin since it’s wordpress.com and not .org, correct?
Using the wordpress.com privacy is a last resort. I would hate for some of my less tech savvy friends and family to feel intimated from using my site because they think they have to create a blogging website (and for some to first find out what a blog is :P ) in order to visit the wedding site.
-
That is correct. No additional plugins can be installed on WordPress.com websites. https://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/
Your friends and family don’t have to sign up for a website. When they sign up they are given the option of requesting only a username. They can add a website in the future if interested.
Actually, it looks like the signup process may have changed. I’ve tagged this for Staff input.

Thanks for tagging for Staff input, and also for being thorough enough to check and make sure what happens during the signup process.
While Staff reviews this concern, it would be just as satisfactory for me if they added a check box for removing “Private:” or “Protected:” from the headline of each page when determining whether to make a page private or not or made it optional somehow. :D

Hi there,
As justjennifer mentioned, you can use the Custom Design feature to customize your theme’s design. Each theme designs how private or password-protected posts or pages will be displayed, and those custom design features will allow you to further customize that design so it’s just the way you like it.

It’s still possible to create just a username, without creating a new site, at this link:

Hi Rachel, thank you for the reply.
Having complete control over the content (I’m not even mentioning style here) of my post titles and how they read should be a basic feature, not a Custom Design feature for which I’m compelled to pay.
Thank you for the simple registration link! It’s a shame though that when my visitors will click on Register, they’ll have no clue that a simpler registration exists! My only option would be to inform them one-by-one and hope they don’t get confused. Depending on such hope would be bad web-design management on my part and a hardly intuitive website experience for my visitors.
I appreciate the responsiveness in this forum, but I must say that I’m entirely disappointed that there isn’t a more basic resolution.

If you’d like more control over your site’s design without upgrading, you may be interested in a self-hosted WordPress site rather than a site hosted here at WordPress.com. (With a self-hosted site you’ll have access to the theme’s PHP files and can make other changes to it.)
We have more details about the differences between self-hosted WordPress and WordPress.com on our page about WordPress.com and WordPress.org. We also have a guide for Moving to a Self-Hosted WordPress Site if you decide to go that route.

If you set up a private site, you can invite viewers directly to that site. The invitation email includes a link to the username-only signup page, to help avoid confusion.
I’ll also pass along your feedback about the Register link, so our team can consider ways to clarify the options for visitors who click there. Thanks for sharing that feedback!

A note on the “Private” – that is only visible to Users (not regular invited in Visitors) – you need to have an account on your blog such as Editor, Author etc. to see the “Private” Posts / Pages – – those that just visit or are invited as Viewers will not see the “Private” wording or the Page / Post behind it – it will be as if the “Private” does not exist

rachelmcr, thanks again for the reply, the options, and especially for passing the feedback up. I’ll review and consider your new suggestions, cheers.
auxclass, I understand your distinction between Users and Viewers. I could be wrong, but I think you misunderstand my conundrum. I only want those that I wish to see the site to be able to see the site–all of it. Plugins aren’t an option, which leaves me with two more. Password-protect each page or limit visibility to only those that I invite. The latter leads to confusing registration process (especially for some of my tech savvy, elder friends and family). The former leaves the word “Protected:” in the title of every password-protected page. Note: I’m not trying to password-protect excerpts or certain content, but rather each page.
-
rachelmcr, in the link you gave me on Inviting Contributors, Followers, and Viewers, I can’t follow some of the instructions. When I try to invite new users, “Viewer” is not an option in the drop-down menu for “Role.” Or am I missing something? It seems in my experience (as well as the previous two examples on the page in the instructions) that “Viewer” is replaced by “Follower.”

Hi there,
Sorry for the confusion. Viewers can only be invited to sites that are marked entirely private by changing the site’s Privacy Settings. Public sites (even ones that include private or password-protected posts and pages) can only have followers, not viewers, since anyone who has a link to the site can view it.

@rachelmcr-thanks for the link to the Account sign up page, but I agree that this is a bit confusing to anyone who lands on the WPcom homepage, where the only option is to sign up for a website.
It would be more practical if that Account only sign up page were linked directly on the WPcom homepage or in the email that the OP sends out to invite Viewers to see the Private site.
