Can our site handle a large spike in traffic in a short amount of time?
-
We are looking to move our emergency blog over to wordpress.com for hosting from a self-managed server. Mostly we desire a self-scaling service so that during a disaster we don’t have to manage our own server infrastructure. The last weather emergency we had jumped our traffic to nearly 100k visits in a day. Can a site under wordpress.com handle this or potentially a much larger spike in traffic?

I’ve looked into that before. Because 95% of the time the traffic is virtually 0, I was optimistic that the standard service could handle the load. I can’t justify paying that much for a monthly service for the few days out of the year it may be needed. If that was the case I would need to invest in another solution that can automatically scale resources. I was hoping wordpress.com would be able to handle a large amount of traffic for a site.

@uwemergency: Absolutely! WordPress.com blogs are on hundreds of servers, so it’ll always be available, even under high traffic.

I hope this helps!

Excellent! I’m very happy to hear that. Is there a general rule of thumb on number of visitors the standard service can handle? IOW, is there a limit where it’s suggested to move either to VIP or self-hosted?
