Can plugins be used if domain is purchased from wordpress?

    Good evening,

New to using template ( or for that matter any kind of web design). I created my site but wanted to add a interactive calander where I can post events that are happening. I did some researching and found out that this can’t be done using a.wordpress.com blog. It states that I need to find my own hosting and from there I can add plugins. I do see in my dashboard where I can purchase a .com domain for my site for 18 bucks a year. So my question is…….. if i purchase the .com domain for my blog can i then add plugins since it is being hosted, or do they mean i need to find another vendor to host my site (ie godaddy.com) I hope my question makes sense and thank you to everyone for your help

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can use Google calendars with wordpress.com.

Buying a domain name here is just that. Your blog here appears with your own domain name. Same rules apply because your site is still hosted here.

To use plugins, or your own theme design (themes are written in PHP script, not HTML) you would have to self-host your site at a third-party hosting service such as dreamhost, bluehost, etc., using the software from wordpress.ORG. Figure an average monthly cost, all things considered of about $10 to $25 depending on your requirements.

No. Purchasing a domain mapping upgrade will not allow you to use plug-ins. Your site will still be hosted on wp.com.

    From: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/
Same Terms of Service: The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not permit the use of any kind of prohibited code or upload additional themes or plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and you will still be required to abide by our Terms of Service.

In order to use plugins you would have to host your site somewhere else and then you could use WordPress.ORG software to make it work.

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org
