Can self-hosted blogs advertise?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi all,

I really love using wordpress, but have accepted that they will probably never allow advertising. I sense that many WP users are comfortable with that, since advertising on blogs usually makes a pittance. However, I’d still like the option. If i move to a self hosted wp blog, can i potentially advertise? If not, is it a major pain to relocate to a typepad blog? Meaning, is it more trouble that it’s worth/may really screw up the content and readership of my growing blog? I’m just weighing my options and would like to hear more experienced bloggers’ thoughts.

    Thanks for your feedback!

  • If you set up a blog externally using the WordPress.org software, you are free to advertise, yes (as long as everything falls in line with your host’s Terms of Service). There are even many plugins for the software that help you in this.

Thank you bubel! How would I go about doing this? (setting up the blog externally using the WP software…)

  • Suitable hosts can be found at http://www.wordpress.org/hosting – once you’re up and running with the software, use the Tools -> Export/Import functions to transfer your content from your WordPress.com blog, as explained in http://support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/

If you hit any bumps along the way when installing the software, you will need to head over to http://www.wordpress.org/support for the appropriate forums.
