“You don’t” is the short answer. Technorati is primarily a ranking tool to tell you (and others) how your blog stacks up in the great linkage stakes.

What I have found is that sometimes people will Technorati their blogs and find that you’ve linked to them; then they will check out your blog. That’s the only direct payoff I’ve found. Once, in a job interview, I did mention my Technorati ranking and the guy laughed me out of the place and called me a wanker. I did then go technorati him and found that my blog’s two mentions of his blog outranked his blog itself, so that was some satisfaction, but not a whole lot.

It’s a referential tool, not really a promotional one.

But I’ve just thought of something that should have been obvious to me: people will use Technorati to check you out, so obviously it’s to your advantage to register there. The guy I was talking about hadn’t, so consequently he looked weenier than me to any bystander checking us out.

I get a fair amount of inbounds from Tech but I’m big on categorizing my posts. Just one of two tags on a post really isn’t much. I’m big on trying to list specific tags. Also helps with the search engine spidering.

I’m getting quite a few hits every day from my use of Technorati tags. Guess that’s a good thing.

Technorati works for me just like Vivian describes.
