Can you send a link to a page you’re struggling with and tell us what went wrong there? Let us know what you wanted so we can try to help you get there.
I have tried some videos but they don’t have the same menu setup that I see
Can you clarify this too?
If you’re looking for a video about menus, we do have one here:

THANK YOU very much for the reply!
As for the menus, what I meant was navigating and selecting functions from my account, not the menus you add to the pages (though those don’t seem to be working the way I thought either).
When looking at instructional videos, for example it might say to click on “this” button to do that, but I don’t see a “this” button to make the page do that, or create that. And the videos I saw seemed to be for more advanced users, so they were not helpful.
So I selected a template and it looked fine. Then I clicked the button “write” and wrote the first page that’s supposed to be a blog. That page did not have the same template, just plain text. And I don’t see any selections anywhere on how to apply a template/theme.
I tried connecting it to the first page I made, the supposed home page. I could not get it to show up under the “blog” menu.
At one point I tried adding one of the “widgets” but it would not show up and was noted as being part of the “footer”, but I was trying to place it in the middle of the page.
Also, I tried to check the box “automatically add pages to your menu” but the box never checked. That happened for a number of options, I could click the box but no check would appear.
So I tried deleting the first page since there seemed to be no connection nd thought to try again from scratch since all the content was backed up.
Now when I look at my dashboard, I’m seeing under “published”, the test “blog” page which is blank but looks like a simple text page with no theme/template, and the first blog entry which is just text without any template/theme. I can’t add a theme to either.
None of it looks or connects how I was trying to get it.
So here’s what I’m trying to do.
I’m trying to use that default template/theme, it started with an “H”, there was only about 20 to choose from.
Or I can use my own pic, but the set up it had was fine for the layout on the home page.
I just want to make a simple blog, with a home/landing page that has a quick blurb for an overall description, and a list of links for posted blogs, or a drop down menu that shows all the blogs. The template I had chosen looked like it was supposed to show an excerpt from the most recently posted (or all?), but it never did, that would have been nice.
I want to be able to add blogs that use the same template/theme, whether they use the same as the homepage or different from that is less important than being the same as each other. They should be connected to the home page and listed on the home page in a way that’s easy for folks to pick one and see a small summary or blurb, ordered from newest to oldest.
If that means deleting what I have and starting from scratch, that’s fine, I backed up the content from that one post and the original home page blurb. I would just like to get this working, linked and displayed right.
If someone can post in simple, easy steps that would really be very much appreciated. Or any links to “wordpress for dummies” type instructions. That would also help narrow down where if you have a step that I don’t see the button on my dashboard to perform that function, I can point it out.
Thanks in advance for any help!!

Also, is there a way to look at a page in Trash? One item did not copy into backup, so I’m trying to look at it.
Thank you.

I also can’t get rid of a stupid column on the contact page. Help please! I want to keep the form part only, and make it page width, but it just stays as a column. :(
This site really needs better instructions and clarifications. I thought it was supposed to be easy. Seems more complicated than rocket science! Need help please. Ready to give up.
Thanks.

Been working on this stupid thing for 4 days and getting Nowhere except elevated blood pressure. Ready to quit before it gives me a heart attack. Any more help???

The one that came with my account. I’m only used what was provided by this site. I haven’t “published” anything yet, the only attempted post so I keep marking “private” until I get this all sorted out and I get another 2 posted. No need to post publicly if I end up quitting this thing. Really frustrated.

Is there an interactive chat service someplace to get live help? I can’t find that here.
-
Email and Livechat with staff is available here with a paid plan. Without seeing your site there’s nothing I can do to help. Perhaps you’d do better with a different theme? WordPress.com is very straightforward if you don’t try to run before you can walk. An attractive site can be created in minutes if you settle for a blog page as your front page and just keep adding posts with images. Sometimes messing about with pages and menus is best left until you’ve got the feel of WordPress.com. There are loads of step by step instructions available here:

This is anything but easy. I’m not trying to do anything complicated. i said before, I’m trying to make it simple. The site seems to be complicating things.
So you only get live support if you pay?
Sounds like I should quit. Really not worth the stress of just trying to make a simple little blog.

Hi there, We’re all providing support here in our community forums. Paid support gives you direct access to LiveChat and support by email.
In addition to the links that @themagicrobot provided, you might also be interested in searching the WPcom support site for specific topics https://en.support.wordpress.com/ and investigating this current offering of webinars too https://wordpress.com/blog/2020/04/17/get-started-daily-webinars/

Sigh.
Ok. Let’s see if you can help me do just one thing.
I used the template, which is supposed to make things easy but it does not.
The “contact” page has some address and phone already, and a contact form, side by side in columns.
I can delete the address and phone, but I have not seen anything anywhere about how to undo the column so that the remaining form is page width.
Can someone tell me how to do just that then? It would be nice to get t least just one thing accomplished after 4 days.

Since your site hasn’t been launched yet, only you and Staff will be able to see what theme you are using. So let’s start with that. If you don’t know the full name of your theme, you can find it when you are in your site’s MySite>Design>Themes, you’ll see the full name of the theme at the top where it says “Current Theme.” Let us know what that is.
In general, all the newer block editor style themes have a static front page enabled. If you want to edit your static front page, you need to open the pages dashboard under MySite>Site>Pages
If you’d rather have your blog posts be your site’s front page, you need to open the Customizer at MySites>Design>Customize>Homepage Settings and then pick “your latest posts” and then publish/save your changes. No changes are made on your site until you click the publish button.
About the Contact page, rather than trying to edit a ready-made page template, why not start with a blank page template and then add the contact form block? https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/form-block/ Be aware that if your site already has a published Contact page (which is likely), your new page will be named Contact-2. To avoid this you can first completely delete your existing Contact page by first deleting it and then emptying it from trash. https://wordpress.com/support/trash/#permanently-deleting-a-post-or-page
If you are new to using the block editor (as we all are) there’s a very detailed tutorial here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/
Post back here if you have other questions.

PS If you are new to all this, I still recommend joining one or more of the webinars available https://wordpress.com/blog/2020/04/17/get-started-daily-webinars/
