Hi, I’ve been trying to get my wordpress Orvis theme to look like the demo, using the portfolio option. I’ve followed the instructions step by step but I’m obviously doing something wrong, can anyone help please? https://shopdaze.wordpress.com/

Hi, It looks like you haven’t changed your front page setting from posts page or default to the portfolio template. Go to your My Sites -> Customize -> Static Front Page and change the Front Page setting to Portfolio.

Make sure you’ve added projects to your Portfolio, and set a Featured Image for each project.

Let us know if you have more questions.

Thank you so much for your reply, I can’t see a Portfolio option there. Is there anyway to attach an image to show you what options I have?

    Hi @shopdaze,

You will first need to publish a new page and entitle it “Home” or “Portfolio” or something similar.

Assign the “Portfolio Page Template” to your new page. Page templates can be assigned via the Page Options module, to the left of your page editor. This support documentation includes screenshots that will give you a clearer idea of what that module looks like and where it can be found:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-options/

Once you’ve created the new portfolio page and assigned the correct page template to it, follow the steps that @juliemrichardson provided to set that page as your site’s static front page. Your portfolio items will automatically then be displayed on that page.

Let us know how you get on with that or if extra questions come up. :)

Hi, thank you so much for your help. I’ve done this but it still isn’t working. Am I doing something wrong with the posts? Am I supposed to add them to the home or something? So confused :s

    Hi there,

Your portfolio items, rather than your posts, will be displayed on your home page.

I currently see your test portfolio item – portfolio testing – when visiting your site. As you add more items, the home page will start to fill out a bit more.

Additionally, if you assign a Featured Image to your portfolio item then that image will be pulled into your home page.

To set a Featured Image on a portfolio item, head to our older interface by adding /wp-admin to the end of your site’s URL. Like so:

    https://shopdaze.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

Navigate to Portfolios > All Projects on the left and then Edit your item. To the right hand side of the editor, you’ll find the Featured Image module where you can upload an image. Save your changes from there to see the image on the home page of your site.

    Hope that helps!

Hi, thank you for your reply, I appreciate it. So I can only add images to the portfolio? Where do I add posts ( as this is what I’ll mainly be adding) Will try this now ! xx

    Hi there,

So I can only add images to the portfolio?

The title of your portfolio item will display over its Featured Image on the main portfolio page. If a visitors clicks on the item, they’ll then be able to see the full content that you’ve added to it.

You can go back to the theme’s demo site to get a clearer idea of how that works:

    https://orvisdemo.wordpress.com/

Where do I add posts ( as this is what I’ll mainly be adding)

Your About page is currently set as your Posts page. That means that all of your posts will automatically be displayed on your site’s About page.

If you’d like to change your Posts page, you can do that by first navigating back to the Static Front Page panel of the Customizer. Select a different page from the Posts page dropdown menu from there.

Your posts won’t be displayed in the same way as your portfolio items. You can see an example of how they’ll be displayed from the “Blog” page on the theme’s demo site:

    https://orvisdemo.wordpress.com/blog/

If you’re not going to build a portfolio or would prefer to feature posts more heavily then you could consider a different theme.

Baskerville, Cubic, and Dyad are a few examples of themes that feature posts on their home page in a similar fashion to the way Orvis features portfolio items.

Theme choice is very much down to personal preference and, so, I encourage you to have a browse through our repository to see if any other themes would better suit your needs:

    https://wordpress.com/themes

You can filter based on different criteria at the top.

Is there anyway to have a portfolio page as the home page without giving it a title? So that is just clean images and the name of the site?
Having HOME or PORTFOLIO there is pretty annoying… but still, I was having the same issue so I’m grateful for this thread.

    Hi @asmolnikova,

I’m glad that this thread helped you out! I’ve replied to your question on your separate thread so that the original poster here doesn’t continue to receive email notifications:

Please ask any extra questions there.

    Thanks!
