Can someone please help with website formatting questions?

    Hi All!

I would like to freshen up my website http://www.pagesandstories.com. I can’t seem to find answers to my questions in the forums and am embarrassed to admit that I can’t seem to remember how on earth I set up my image! In a nutshell, I would like to format my site the way that Duet is shown on your website. I would like my page name and navigation bar at the top of all pages followed by my featured image. Right now, I am using a static page as my home page but don’t mind if I have to get rid of that. Honestly, I am not even sure where to direct this email; I have so many issues, lol! I thought this was a featured image problem but there is no way to enable the “featured image” in my screen options for the page, only the posts. Sigh . . . Please help and thanks so much!!! 

    Hey Laura!

I’m happy to help you get this setup. So, currently, your front page is set to display your latest posts. If you’re looking to recreate the Duet theme demo, you’ll want to switch that instead to display your latest posts. You can do that from your Reading settings here:

    https://pagesandstories.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php

Just change “Front page displays” to “Your latest posts”.

Next, in order to have the slider up top, you’ll want to add featured images to your posts and choose them to show in the slider following the instructions here:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/duet/support/#Adding_posts_to_the_slider

Many of the other features including how to use the multiple post formats are explained here:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/duet/support/

You can setup the custom menu following the instructions here:

    Menus

Just a note regarding pages, those do not allow featured images. Only posts can have featured images. Pages cannot be included in the post slider at the top of the Duet demo home page.

Give those steps a try and please let me know if you have any trouble or any additional questions!

    Hey Jeremey!

Thanks so much!!! I decided to proceed with your directions before responding in case I had further questions, Of course, I do; sorry! :) First, I am unable to make my feature banner orange. I set it to orange and I see that orange is the default color but no luck with that. Not sure why.

Also, I cannot seem to be able to get my menu bar and website title to appear at the top of the page. In fact, after I set up my featured slider, the name of my website completely disappeared. I rigged it by setting it up as the title to my feature post for the time being, but I really love the way the theme on your website features the website name and menu at the top. I am wondering if the problem stems from my custom menu since I noticed that I can’t seem to make my sidebars appear where I want them to either. This link,http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/ , states that I should be offered a choice of where I want my menu to appear on the page but that did not happen, so I must have messed it up somehow. :) Thanks for your patience. You all are the best!

P.S. Thanks for the great links you sent. Those will help with a lot of the Duet options available to me.

    Hey Laura,

    Please see my answers below!

First, I am unable to make my feature banner orange. I set it to orange and I see that orange is the default color but no luck with that. Not sure why.

Currently, it looks like you have a background image set of some script writing here:

    https://pagesandstories.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=custom-background

The background image is covering up the orange background. Can you try adjusting the display options on that page (changing from “Tile” to “No Repeat” for example) and see if you get the look you want? Additionally, you can remove the background image entirely if you would like.

Also, I cannot seem to be able to get my menu bar and website title to appear at the top of the page.

You’re correct in that you should be presented with multiple locations for your menu. However, those locations differ by theme. The Duet theme only offers one menu location which is shown here:

    https://pagesandstories.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php?action=locations

Currently, it looks like you have an image setup as your logo (the pen on the paper with the flower). I’ve created an image showcasing the various elements of the Duet demo:

    Duet Layout

So, to set this up, I’d recommend uploading a slightly smaller logo image under the theme options here (under logo and featured slider):

    https://pagesandstories.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=duet

If you keep the large image at the top, your content and slider will be pushed a bit farther down.

Next, you’ll want to start including posts in the Featured Slider. You’ve selected the option here, but you didn’t include a featured image:

    https://pagesandstories.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=299&action=edit

For a post to appear in the slider, you’ll want to add a featured image as explained here:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/duet/support/#Adding_posts_to_the_slider

Let’s give those steps a try and see where we’re at. After following the instructions above, you should have a layout that looks similar to the Duet demo. Let me know if you get stuck!

Okay, I am happy to report that everything is up and running thanks to you. :) The only thing I decided to give up on was the feature banner. I didn’t like the green color and I didn’t want to delete my background image on order to make it orange. That’s okay though, because everything else went so well and I’m so happy with the way everything looks now. You are a tower of patience. :) WordPress needs to give you a raise! Have a great day, a wonderful weekend and thanks again. Take care!
