Can someone show my why my menu is not being displayed?

Hi folks
I am trying to work out how to add menus. I have read the WordPress page and also watched the video. But despite creating a menu, it just will not display.
I have created a blog simply to try out these ideas. I have also posted two images, one of the blog, and the other my menu settings on dashboard. You can see them here:

I would like to have a top navigation menu which has two items, About, and My Work. The About is meant to be a page. When the mouse hovers over My Work (the name of my menu), I would like it to show the two sub menus, What I do and Where I work.
However, as you will see, I just get a single top navigation menu with HOME, About, What I do, and Where I work.
Am I doing something daft? I just can not work out how to get the menus to work.

When you create a custom menu you can include all the items including published Pages that you want to appear in it and exclude all else.

They must be public pages – not private and not draft.
Public – The page will be visible to everyone.
Protected – The page is protected with a password you set. Only people who have the password can view a protected page.
Private – Pages are only visible to blog Editors and Administrators. Private pages are not visible in Reader, feeds, or in any search. A page can be private without being password protected.

Troubleshooting – My menu isn’t appearing
Go to the custom menu page in the dashboard Appearance > Menus and in the “Manage location” module at upper left select your custom menu from the pulldown and then click “save”. -
Hi – thanks for these.
I have now managed to work out my mistake. When you create a new menu, it actually replaces the default navigation menu. I had thought that I was creating new menu items in this. Therefore what I thought were second level menus are actually the ones that appear along the top.
It does mean that on my main menu when the mouse rolls over the menu item, that menu item is also a page as well as being the parent of the sub-pages, but this is massive progress for me!
