  You will need to purchase an annually renewable custom design upgrade and then do the required CSS editing to remove them.

  You’re welcome. Do note that many themes provide the ability to upload a custom image background http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/custom-background/ and “wood-grain” backgrounds are available free of charge on the internet.
