Can the photo-sizing issue I'm having with Nishita be fixed?

  • Unknown's avatar

When inserting photos for my Nishita-theme blog into a post, I choose Full Size (long dimension = 1080 pixels). (Even though 1024 pixels wise is supposedly the max image size for the theme, the Full Size choice shows 1080 pixels as the long dimension.) My uploaded photos are all 1024 pixels or larger on the long dimension, but when I preview the post, the image is always smaller than 1080 pixels in the long dimension. I have been using a work-around for this problem for over a year. This involves editing the photo while in the edit post mode, selecting the medium size for the photo, then immediately selecting full size and saving the change. The photo will then present at the desired 1080-pixel wide/tall size. Can this problem be fixed? The problem seems to be in the HTML code used by the theme when initially choosing ‘Full Size’ for an added photo. The Full Size choice does not translate to the intended 1080 pixel long dimension size but to what looks like the Medium size. Only by going through the edit work-around can the full size be realized. I hope this little problem can finally be fixed!

    Hi there,

Sure thing! This 1080 pixel size is actually coming from your site’s media settings, under Settings > Media in your WP Admin dashboard. Under “Image Sizes” there, you can specify the maximum dimensions for images on your site, and those can be different from your theme’s default settings.

Next to “Large Size” there, you have a max width and height of 1080 pixels. You can enter a larger size there (for example, 1024 pixels) and the images you add to your site will be larger.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

Thanks, Rachel. Unfortunately, I still think there is something amiss with the Nishita theme mechanics. The Settings>Media settings for my site have always had a 1080 x 1080 pixel setting for “Large Size”. (I recently changed the Large Size setting to 1024 x 1024 to be consistent with the Nashita theme’s declared maximum size of 1024 rather than 1080 which I believe it was two years ago when I started using the theme.) But when inserting a photo in a new post, several options appear in the Size drop-down: Thumbnail, Medium, Large, and Full Size. (“Full Size” isn’t listed in Settings>Media, by the way.) Interestingly, the max pixel dimensions for these size options are 150 (Thumbnail), 300 (Medium), 774 (Large), and 1024 or 1080 (Full Size). The Thumbnail and Medium dimensions match those of my Settings>Media, but the Large clearly does not. The max long dimension under “Full Size” appears to be the actual image’s max dimension. All my uploaded images have been 1080 or 1024 on the long dimension.

So to recap the current behavior I’m experiencing with Nishita:

    1. I choose “Full Size” in the Size choice for a photo I’m inserting into a post (a size NOT found under Settings>Media);
    2. When inserted into the post in the post editor, the image is sized at a max dimension of 774 pixels rather than the 1024 or 1080 pixels of the actual image. The same happens, BTW, if I choose “Large” as the image size when inserting an image: when I inspect the HTML text, the large dimension of the image size is 774, NOT the 1024 set as Large under Settings>Media.
    3. To get the image size to be 1024 (formerly 1080), I have to use the work-around I described in my initial query.

This is why I think there may be something off with the Nishita coding that governs the initial insertion of an image into a post. The work-around I describe solves the problem, but frankly it’s a nuisance that can probably be fixed.

I look forward to your further thoughts on this…

    Hi there,

Sorry, I misunderstood what was causing the problem for you — thanks for clarifying! I have been testing this out on another blog, and so far I haven’t been able to reproduce the problem you’re having. (I’m able to add full-size images and they appear 1024 pixels wide, filling the full width of the posts.)

Could you add a draft post or a private post on your blog so I can test adding full-size images there, to try to better understand what’s going wrong? Trying it out directly on your blog will help me understand what’s happening there so I can explain the issue to our team.

Hi Rachel. Thanks for looking into this issue further. I have just created a draft post on my mandalagraphs.com site entitled “Draft post for testing media sizing problem with Nishita”. I look forward to your analysis!

Thanks so much! I see now what I was missing — this problem only pops up when you add a caption to the image. When you add an image without a caption, it shows up at the full width. (I saved the draft with the images so you can see what I mean.) Thanks for your patience while I sorted that out. :)

I’ve reported this issue to our theme developers so they can take a look at it. I’ll let you know as soon as I get an update from them!

Great trouble-shooting, Rachel! It never would have occurred to me to try posting an image without a caption, given generally minimalist way I present my posts with captions and very little text. I hope this will be an easy problem for the theme developer to remedy. I’m only sorry, now, that I didn’t pursue this long ago… Thanks!
