Can uploaded files be publicly accessed by url not clicking?
-
I’d like to upload files to my WordPress area that anyone can access just by entering the url on their browser. I don’t want to make these accessible by clicking from my WP blog.
Does anyone know if this can this be done? (…and not by using SCRIBD!)
Thanks

Each image you upload has a URL so yes, you can send out the URLs by email or put them in a post or page or whatever you want to. If you go to media > library and click “edit” for an image, there is a field toward the bottom that gives the URL of the image.

What others have done is choosing not to upload the files into their blogs, instead they use a contact form and request that those who want copies emailed to them use it. Will that work for you? http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/

Thanks @thesacredpath. That will, it is true, give the url… BUT…
1. Try and copy and paste? Oh dear me no! That would be far too easy. WP has found a way to prevent that happening. The user has to type it out using finger and eyeball! (In 2010.)
2. Not only would that be enough to fail by my books, but consider the mental ergonomics of requiring the user to click on the BLACK word LIBRARY, when other clickable fields are in the standard blue! WHY USE BLUE EVER, then?? It only tends to deflect the user from clicking anything that isn’t blue. It just looks like a non-clickable heading.
Well, ok, that’s what a user has to do to get that to work. I just couldn’t believe that was the way the system designers thought it should be done. By now though I should have known better.
Thanks @timethief. That would do something that would be suitable for some purposes, but what I had in mind is slightly different. The contact form will come in useful though, so thanks for mentioning it.

sciencepolice2010, you have uterly and completely confused me. Are you saying you cannot create a clickable link to a image file in 2010?
I’ve done it 4 different ways in this post on my test blog.

Why don’t you give us a link to an example of what you want to do? An actual working example, because right now I’m at a loss as to what you are asking for.

You should be able to upload the file directly into the media library then email the file link to people.
I put files I want to have restricted distribution in a Post that is password protected then email the Post and password to those that need the files.

I, too, am confused. If your users can’t handle clicking on a link, are you sure you want them in the first place?
I really don’t see the difficulty at all. If you just want to email them the image, why would you need to upload it in the first place?
