Can we please get numbered comments as an option on all themes?

I have been waiting and waiting for numbered comments to be available on all themes. I have WAY too many comments to be without it and they all inter-reference each other. I cannot change my theme because the one I have is the ONLY one that has numbered comments. Please, please, please, please make this an option! I have been waiting for over 5 years for this.

I did a scan through many of our recent themes, and you’re correct – I couldn’t find another one that has numbered comments. I can’t say for sure, but it’s likely that many future themes won’t include this either.
Instead of using numbered comments for discussion purposes (to reference one another), what do you think about allowing threaded discussion wherein users can reply directly to one another?

I tried that before. I have back and forth conversations that go 20 or 30 times. You don’t have threads that go deep enough. Besides that, many folks on my blog prefer to have the comments in chronological order. They find it easier to keep track of them. Please, please, please consider this as an option. For blogs that have a lot of conversation like mine, numbered comments are ESSENTIAL. I would really like to change my theme, but I can’t because of the numbered comments. I can’t think this would be a difficult change to make. Just find the code in the theme in my blog and import it to all the others, or make a new option. Please, pretty please?

I checked with our theme developers and confirmed that numbered comments were largely phased out for threaded, paginated comments. The numbered comments won’t be making a comeback into any of our current or future themes.
It does look like your readers interact with one another in the comment section quite a bit and reference each other by number. Can you let me know a bit more about why comment threading doesn’t work?

I realize we only have threaded comments that go 10 levels deep, but users could either reference one another through mentioning the username (in the same way they do the numbers) or by using quotes as they are now.

Jeremey, thanks so much for interacting. I have already given some reasons for why the threaded comments don’t work for me. I simply have too many comments. When someone posts a new comment, and it’s on threaded mode, they often have a tough time finding their comment again (not to mention responses!). I have had many people say that they prefer to see the comments in the order in which they were posted, and I have to say that I agree with that assessment. Mentioning the username doesn’t work, because there are often 10 or 20 comments by the same author on a single thread.
I am puzzled by why this would be such a difficult thing to do for the developers. Why can’t there just be an option in the comment display place for numbered comments on any theme? It wouldn’t then have to be tied to a particular theme. Instead, it could be used for any theme.

With threaded and paginated comments, there really isn’t much use for numbered comments any longer. I even checked themes at other design agencies, and I couldn’t find any themes that have numbered comments. It’s a function that’s been replaced by newer functions. It’s not going to come back into the design of our themes.
Why can’t there just be an option in the comment display place for numbered comments on any theme?
Comment styling is handled on a per-theme basis so having an option to enable comment numbers wouldn’t really be that easy. Each theme would need to be adjusted to allow for numbered comments whenever this option was enabled. That’s not something we intend to do going forward.
I would recommend using the following two methods combined:
- Threaded comments – 10 levels isn’t a ton, but it’s something!
- @ username mentions – combined with quotes like your readers are using now, they could specify the comment they’re referring to
